Berte was the faithfull servant of Juliane Tesman for years. When Jorgen and Hedda married, Berte went into their service. She still retains close, informal bonds with Juliane and Jorgen, whom she helped to raise.
When we first meet Berte, she is cleaning the house the morning after Jorgen and Hedda arrive home from their honeymoon.
