Picasso at the Lapin Agile by Steve Martin

Directed and Introduced by K. Zachary Abbott

"Picasso at the Lapin Agile" is presented by special arrangement with Concord Theatricals.

Taking its inspiration from Picasso's 1905 painting At the Lapin Agile, this play imagines a meeting between the young Picasso and the young Einstein in 1904 as each stands at the brink of fame. Their fast-paced repartee touches on love, art, science, and women. Both will find new ways of looking at the world: Picasso for the famous Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, Einstein for the Theory of Relativity. Martin fills this Parisian bar with characters, each given delicious monologues that allow them to briefly own the room with their levity, inanity, and humanity. Enjoy, as Picasso muses, "The twentieth century has to start somewhere, and why not now?"

Please Note: masking in all indoor settings, with the exception of instructional spaces, will be voluntary effective Monday, October 3, 2022.

This change to the Institute's campus masking requirements, as first outlined in a September 1 community message, aligns with local public health directives and guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It also responds to improving trends in COVID-19 case activity on campus and in the local community.

Please note that while the Institute will no longer require masking in all indoor settings or at large outdoor events, all members of the Caltech community who wish to continue to wear a mask are encouraged to do so. Please see the Caltech Together website for more information.
