Oral Communication for Intermediate Japanese Courses
日本語二年会話
Oral Communication (OC) which will be held
once a week (usually Fridays) consists of i) individual
conversation practice with your instructor, ii) interviews
with a third-year Japanese student and a Japanese native
speaker, and iii) talks by guest speakers in class.
i) Individual Conversation
Individual OC will be conducted by a pair of students with
the instructor for 10 minutes each session. Each student is
supposed to sign up his/her time at the beginning of each
quarter. OC topics below are provided for your preparation:
to create and memorize a dialogue or a statement. In each
session a few related topics will be given for a pair to
have ad hoc conversations as well as an assigned one.
Your attendance and dialogue memorization will be
evaluated.
OC test will be given for L107a & b, and a presentation
in class is required for L107c, based on your practice
during the term.
会話テスト OC Test
Oral Communication will be tested as follows:
1. You will be given a topic beforehand. You will exchange
a short (several) dialogues with your partner.
You will be tested on:
memorization (20 points),
grammar/vocabulary (5 points), and
creativity (5 points).
2. You will be asked to have two conversations with your
partner on the spot.
You will be tested on:
grammar/vocabulary (20 points),
creativity (30 points), and
use of the styles below (20 points).
Adversity passive forms, polite forms (honorific, humble,
and polite), male and female sentence finals, and/or other
appropriate styles.
You will be evaluated based on your individual performance.
発表 Presentation
Important: There is NO make-up for your presentation!
Presentation guideline:
1) You can select any topic.
2) Your presentation can be either with other people or by
yourself.
3) The length is approximately 5 minutes per person.
4) Turn in your draft, then memorize the corrected version
of your talk.
5) The evaluation will be: creativity 30%, memorization
30%, pronunciation 20%, participation 20%
Interview

Conversation with a third-year student/a
Japanese
Instruction
1. You will be assigned your interviewee in advance.
2. You or your OC pair email your interviewee to set up
your meeting ASAP.
3. You will meet him/her with your partner one or two times
until one week before the composition/report deadline.
4. Prepare questions before meeting(s).
(Any questions, but you have to understand the answers in
Japanese!)
5. You should talk with him/her in JAPANESE at least one
hour.
6. Write a composition based on your conversation.
Check the calendar for the deadline.
