OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE:
Advanced Japanese (108a-108c) is designed for students who have taken
the Elementary and Intermediate Japanese courses at Caltech or a similar
class elsewhere.
The emphasis is on developing overall language skills: Literary and
newspaper readings: Technical and scientific translation:
Improve listening and speaking ability so as to communicate with
Japanese people in real situations.
Recognition of the 1850 "general-use characters" (教育漢字).

The immediate goals in each term will be:
to learn about 600 kanji characters and their compounds
to read technical articles, essays and newspaper articles
to develop proficiency in oral communication
to write compositions/reports with complex sentences and kanji


REQUIREMENT:

Preparation for the Class:
Read/practice relevant sections in the textbook before class.

Homework:
Homework can be either exercises or compositions.
The composition evaluation is based on
i) correct use of complex sentence structures and grammar (25%),
ii) the number of kanji used (20%),
iii) correct use of vocabulary and usages (20%),
iv) independent learning outside of class (20%), and
v) creativity (15%).
*Use wordprocessing program in writing at least ONE composition.

Listening Practice:
Every week, you are supposed to listen to the lesson tapes for at least two hours at Caltech Languages Program.

Quizzes:
Kanji/vocabulary quizzes will be given three times (kanji Q 1, voc. Q 2) in one lesson. The highest 5 will be counted.
There is NO make-up.
Lesson quizzes will be given after each lesson.

Presentation/Project:
Presentation will be performed based on the practice of Oral Communication. Presentation can be substituted by a project.

Final Exam:
Listening & translation, etc.
