OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE:
Intermediate Japanese (107a-107c) is designed for students
who have taken
the Elementary Japanese course at Caltech or a similar
class elsewhere.
The emphasis is on developing writing skills as well as
oral skills.
The immediate goals in each term will be:
1) to learn about 150 kanji characters and their compounds
2) to develop proficiency in oral communication
3) to write compositions with complex sentences and kanji
4) to read related essays
REQUIREMENT:
Preparation for the Class:
Read/practice relevant sections in the textbook before
class.
Homework:
Homework can be either exercises or compositions.
The composition evaluation is based on:
correct use of complex sentence structures and grammar
(25%),
the number of kanji used (20%),
correct use of vocabulary and usages (20%),
independent learning outside of class (20%), and creativity
(15%).
*Use wordprocessing program in writing at least ONE
composition.
Listening Practice:
Every week, you are supposed to listen to the lesson tapes
for at least two hours at
CLASS MATERIALS .
Quizzes:
Kanji/vocabulary quizzes will be given in each lesson.
Lesson quizzes including Listening section will be given on
Day 8 of each Lesson.
*Hand writing only.
Oral Communication:
Practice will be conducted in two forms, individual and
class meetings. More information at

Oral Exam:
Creative conversations and discussions will be tested based
on the practice of Oral communication section.
Final Exam:
Listening , translation, etc.
Extra Kanji Practice (Optional):
If you like to receive extra points by doing extra kanji
practice, if you are qualified. See the section "
Kanji Practice".

COURSE POLICY:
#1 Final Exam & Composition:
Take-home. You may use any dictionaries and reference
books, but you may not discuss/consult with other people.
Make-up and late due may be permitted by written
request (before the due) only.
#2 Composition
1) Any past due compositions will have
5% per day
subtracted.
2) You have to follow the composition format which will be
provided at the beginning of the course.
If you turn in your composition by email to the instructor,
the file name should be your last name in
English.
Example: hirata.pdf or hirata.doc
The violation
will be subtracted 1-5%
#3 Weekly Quiz & Oral Exam:
Make-up may be permitted by a written request (before the
due) only.
The weekly quizzes are take-home but not open-book.
You cannot use a computer.
#4 Vocab.Kanji Quiz:
There is
NO make-up. The quizzes are in
class. The highest 7 (out of 8) will be counted.
#5 Homework:
Late homework
will have 10% per day subtracted.
#6 Attendance:
When your
absent rate reaches 30%, you will be dropped from the
course automatically.
