ttym4us@juno.net Jeff Eby October 1962 - June 1964 E Division, Light Power Shop. What a great time aboard this great War Ship. Funny how we walk away, seemingly so, so glad to get off and on with our life. But as the years go by, our memory is very selective. We begin to remember only the good times and how much fun we had with men and boys we haven't heard from or seen since. What a great pleasure for me to here from some of the old shipmates and chew the fat about the adventures that seemed at the time just passing the time. I had a great time aboard the Hornet, so young and so full of life. When I visited the old "Grey Ghost" in Alameda, I was overwhelmed with nostagia. Funny, after all these years, how you only remember the good times and great adventures. If you are a veteran of the Hornet, I urge you to visit the ship. You will never regret it. To walk those decks again made me feel so young. I would love to hear from old shipmates. If your out there contact me.

stevef123@aol.com or steve@toprinting.com Steve Feldman LI3 1969 - 1970 X Division - Print Shop. Apollo 11 & 12 / Bremerton, WA - If only I knew that my time aboard Hornet was one of the best times of my life. Late May of last year I made the pilgrimage to San Francisco and to the Hornet. What a day it was! On arrival to the pier were about 15 vintage 1940's cars. Then up the brow to the hangar bay. Looked exactly the way it did 32 years ago when I left. Of course, how much can you change a 42,000 ton aircraft carrier? It even smelled the same. Yum, salt water and oil! Got hold of the main man and he escorted me down to the old Print Shop. Still there. Right where I left it. The racks are gone and the lockers. The presses and vertical camera are still in place. It really took me back. Floods of memories returned to these aging brain cells. All of the great friends made, great times had, great dumb stuff we did. Oh, to be 22 again. Had hair then! All one color too!

James M. (Mike) McBean I was in the 2nd div / boat crew / made 3 WestPac cruise's. Left the Hornet in 1962. went on to serve aboard the Uss Epperson DD714 out of the pine apple fleet and was on the forward refueling station when we collided with the Hornet during refueling. I left the Epperson and went on to ride a couple more escorts and ended up on the USS Topeka CLG69 and made 2 Med cruise's on her before I decided to get out of the navy. Since then I have been trying to find any cruise books during my time on board the Hornet

jwmcgill@mindspring.com James W. McGill I was on the Hornet only in transit from San Diego the Subic Bay, Phillipines from May-August 1959. I learned to love her, especially after spending time on the USS Goss, 444, Destroyer Escort. I loved that short time on board even though I was more of a 'land lubber' The night flights and other practices were great experiences. I saw tragedies and comedies and every experience in between. I was a Communications Technician 2nd Class, and was at that time on my way to Okinawa. I saw flight accidents and real experiences during that time. I certainly would enjoy being involved with former members of her crew. I do plan to see her again someday!

bill_spillane@hotmail.com Bill Spillane February 1965 - February 1967 V-4 Fuels Division. In 1995, when the HORNET was scheduled for the scrapper, Gary Reilly (Hornet crewmember) and I went aboard the ship at Hunter's Point S.F. Gary brought his daughter and I brought my son to see the ship. Astoria Metals allowed us to go aboard and see the ship probably for the last time. We went below decks and looked around, and then to the island. Gary took some video, and I took some still photos. We walked around the flight deck carefuylly because the preservation covering was still on the deck. It was a great sentimental journey and the loss of this ship was imminent. Several weeks later, when I was working on the top of a highrise in SF, I saw the Hornet being pulled out from the Point. I thought well this is it, to Taiwan and it'll come back as a car. But no, the Hornet was pushed to Alameda NAS and was temporarily saved for Fleet Week 95. The USS Carl Vinson was at the same pier as the Hornet. The Hornet was xUSS Hornet. Some of the dailors from the Vinson came over, and I was able to talk to them. They remarked how similiar the two carriers really were. The Vinson was just bigger, bigger to launch bigger planes. More later

jamesmt@concentric.net James M. Thompson I served aboard the Hornet between 1958 & 1959. My job was as as a yeoman in the engineers logroom, until I got my orders for submarine school. I have a cruize book for the westpac trip prior to 1958. The air group were flying FJ-4 Bravos on this cruize. When I went aboard the Hornet, it was in the yards at Bremerton, WA. After an open house in Seattle, we steamed south to Long Beach, Terminal Island, loaded supplies for about six days, and then on to San Diego to load most of the air group. This must hve been the conversion from CVA to CVS, because when the air group flew aboard, it was S2F-1 Trackers. There were also 6 obsolete Banshees that saw little flight time during this cruize.
