Brief Teaching Bio

Dr. Stiles is passionate about improving teaching and encouraging young scientists. She has helped organize the Conference for Undergraduate Women in Physics (CUWiP) at USC for three years, and at Caltech for one year, which encourages undergraduate women to attend graduate school in Physics. She was also a co-director for the Caltech Project for Effective Teaching(CPET) for three years, which organizes a Teaching Certificate Program and Workshop Series at Caltech.

Teaching Experience

  • Biology Tutorial Lecturer for Biology 23 section 7, Winter 2015, the California Institute of Technology. 
    • Designed course titled, “Controversies in Neuroscience: Learning to Ask the Right Questions”, where students present conflicting perspectives of a current neuroscience debate and then discuss the controversy. 
    • Responsibilities:  Course design, course organization, lecturing, and grading.
  • Teaching Assistant for Computation and Neural Systems 176, Cognition, Spring 2011, California Institute of Technology, Professor Shinsuke Shimojo. 
    • Responsibilities:  Aided in course re-design, gave a lecture, ran two separate discussion sections, graded homework sets and presentations, organized speakers, and generated grading rubrics.
  • Teaching Assistant for Biology 150, Introduction to Neuroscience, Fall 2010, California Institute of Technology, Professor Henry Lester, and Professor Ralph Adolphs. 
    • Responsibilities:  Graded homework, kept weekly office hours, formulated midterm and final exam problems, ran a discussion section.

Teaching Honors and Awards

  • The Caltech Excellence in Teaching Award, 2015
  • Signed by the Graduate Dean and the President of Caltech.  
  • Awarded for excellence in teaching in the classroom, and extensive teaching development activities outside of classroom, including TA training improvement and planning, teaching seminar series planning, teaching library collection management, and online teaching lecture series development.
  • Certificate of Interest in University Teaching, Caltech Office of the Vice Provost
  • Participated in at least six Caltech Project in Effective Teaching (CPET) seminars, and wrote a reflective journal entry for each seminar.
  • Administered by the Caltech Project for Effective Teaching.

  • Postdoctoral Scholar member of the Title IX Committee
    • California Institute of Technology, Fall 2014 – Spring 2015.
  • Co-Director of the Caltech Project for Effective Teaching, Spring 2011 to Fall 2014.
    • Responsibilities:  Organized teaching workshops by excellent teachers from Caltech and other local universities and administered a teaching certificate program (website: http://teachlearn.caltech.edu/cpet). 
    • Generated a library of seminar videos on YouTube that has attracted over 5,000 views. 
    • Updated and expanded the CPET library collection of teaching and professional development books.
  • Member of the Caltech TA Conference Planning Committee, Summer 2014. 
    • Planned and led two sessions at the conference: Authoring Problems for Sets & Exams and How to Plan and Run a Tutorial Class at Caltech. 
    • Also presented a poster on the programs offered by the Caltech Project for Effective Teaching (CPET).
  • Member of the Caltech TA Conference Planning Committee, Summer 2013. 
    • Planned and led two sessions at the conference: Authoring Problems for Sets & Exams and Teaching Outside the Classroom: Research Mentoring. 
    • Also planned a TA panel for the opening session and presented a brief introduction to the conference.
  • Graduate student member of the selection committee for the 2013 Richard P. Feynman Prize for Excellence in Teaching at Caltech. 
    • The Feynman Prize rewards Caltech faculty that are exceptional mentors and educators.
  • Member of the Caltech Graduate Orientation Planning Committee, Summer 2011 and Summer 2012. 
    • Participated in planning Teaching Assistant training, including organizing a committee of excellent existing TAs, speaking about the Caltech Project for Effective Teaching, and organizing speakers for other Caltech teaching services and relevant outreach.
