This is a grating substrate (aluminum block), attached to a sector gear, cut out from an originally round gear. This is actually a dummy grating. The real things have special coatings on the two surfaces presented here that split light into a spectrum. The large surface accommodates the high resolution grating, while the small surface is for the low resolution mode.
