physics.  As attached to the China Center of IUE 
Satellite Data, the Center seeks to promote significant

Center for Children's Amblyopia and 
Strabismus
Director: Professor Shou, Tiande

The center is a combination of basic research and 
clinical application in vision and clinical visual 
electrophysiology improves diagnosis and therapy 
which are of high occurrence among children. Now the 
center tries to provide earlier treatment for 
youngsters, which is widely accepted.

children's amblyopia and strabismus; Pattern evoked

Center of Nonlinear Science

This is the southern  headquarters for the National 
Basic Research Project "Nonlinear Science". The 
Center is comprised of five research groups--Integral 
System Theory, Nonlinear Dynamics, Nonlinear 
Physics, Factual Theory, Theoretical Physics.  As 
Nonlinear science is a frontier discipline crossing 
fundamental science, the Center brings together 
professors from the departments of Mathematics, 
Physics, Chemistry, Modern Physics, and Material 
Science as well as the Center of Fundamental Physics.  
The faculty in turn offers wide-ranging scientific 
research cooperation with faculty members in more 
than ten departments on the campus.  Since its 
inception in 1989, the Center has attained 
achievements in scientific research, ranking first place 
in domestic scientific research of nonlinear science 
and theoretical physics.  The Center is an important 
influence in the field throughout the world.

Center for Petroleum Study

Main Activities: Petroleum exploration and 
development are involved in many science and 
technology fields.  Consequently, interdisciplinary 
knowledge is required to solve the problems with 
which the oil fields encounters.  The center was 
established in 1994 to promote cooperation among 
faculty members from various departments of USTC 
and engineers from oil fields and petroleum industry in 
conducting such basic and applied research.

The laboratory mainly focuses on high-speed data 
acquisition and real-time signal processing.  Courses 
for undergraduates and graduates include Fast

programming languages and Digital signal processing 
in experimental systems.

application of high-speed (200 Mega samples per

Processing  System.  Full-time faculty includes 1 
professor and 6 associate professors.

Institute of Applied Mechanics

The institute was founded in 1991 for the 
promotion of frontier research in applied mechanics.  
A number of fundamental research projects, sponsored 
by the National Natural Science Foundation, the 
Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the State 
Commission of Education, are carried on.  The 
Institute also pays great attention to interdisciplinary 
studies, to put mechanics theory into practical 
applications and to connect projects with industry.

Institute of Biomedical Engineering

The institute is a cross-disciplinary academic 
organization for research and product development on 
the intercourse of engineering and life sciences.  Six 
full-time professors and over twenty associate 
professors are engaged in research activities. Over the 
years, eight books and more than three-hundred papers 
have been published from research at the Institute, and 
over ten research achievements have received state 
awards.  The Institute has become an important base for 
the development of biomedical engineering in China.

the specific function of proteins and their genes is the 
fundamental problem of molecular biology.  
Knowledge gained in this area is based on structure

physical properties measurements, structure analysis

This institute is established jointly by the Lab of  
High Energy Physics of the Swiss Federal Institute of 
Technology ( ETHZ) , Zurich  and  the  Modern 
Physics Department of the University of Science and 
Technology of  China (USTC), Hefei. The purpose is to  
accelerate  research  and  development in Compact  
Muon Spectrometer  and  Antimatter    Spectrometer. 
It consists of the High Energy Physics Group and  the  
Fast  Electronics Group. Research activities are 
carried out in both Hefei and Zurich, and supported by 
the  two  sides  both  financially  and  administratively. 
Candidates for doctoral degrees in high energy physics 
will receive  scholarships to finance their studies.

The Laboratory conducts research and development 
in the fields of nuclear instruments, neutron activation 
analysis, and trace elements. Over 20 research 
achievements have been accomplished, including the 
microcomputer based nuclear weight, which was 
selected by the State Commission of Science and 
Technology for nationwide distribution.

Young Scientist Laboratory of 
Structure Biology

The Young Scientist Laboratory of Structure 
Biology (YSLSB), was found by the Chinese Academy 
of Sciences in December 1994 to address the research 
forefront in three focus areas in structure biology; 
biological macromolecular crystallography, multi-
dimensional NMR and computer simulation. In the 
present, the dynamics, structure-based design and 
structure-function relationships of important 
macromolecules in life processes are being 
investigated.
