>From: USTCAF Network <ustc.fund@@cauchy.math.udel.edu>

Up to October 8, 1995, USTC Alumni Foundation has collected $6,578
from its 140 members. The following classes has 3 or more members in
USTCAF:

771, 774, 781, 814, 817, 8210, 8311, 8500, 855, 857, 8611, and 8900

Members are encouraged to help the fund raising by passing the news
and getting their classmates to join the USTC Alumni Foundation.

USTC Alumni Foundation also received several letters from the
USTC Administration and USTC Alumni Office in Hefei. These letters
are available in USTCAF WWW site. In particular, USTC has recently
set up the USTC Education Fund (USTCEF), it will conduct fund raising
among industrial coorporations, social organizations and alumni, both
domestic and overseas, to help USTC achieving its goal to become
a world-class university in early next century.

USTC Alumni Foundation will support the fund raising effort of USTC
Education Fund. It is still under discussion, however it is largely
favored for USTCAF to stay independent of USTCEF to ensure the proper
use of such fund.

For further information, please visit the WWW site of USTCAF at

http://www.math.udel.edu/dept/szhang/fund.html

or contact Prof. Shangyou Zhang (771) at szhang@math.udel.edu

To make a contribution, send your check to S. Zhang, 901 Rahway Dr.,

---------------------------------------------------------------------
1. From People's Daily 9/21/95

USTC is a major base for postdoctoral research

After 10 years' hard work, USTC has set up 7 postdoctoral
research stations covering 20 Ph.D. granting areas. USTC has
accepted 75 postdoctoral research associates since opening of
these stations which is the largest among the branches in
Chinese Academy of Sciences. USTC has become one of three major
bases for postdoctoral research along with Beijing and Shanghai.

USTC was among the first to set up postdoctoral stations since
postdoctoral system was introduced into China in 1985. It accepts
more than 20 postdoctoral associates every year. They are carrying
out more than 100 projects sponsored by Chinese National Science
Foundation and National 863 Projects etc. getting world-class
achievements.

Most of the 42 postdoctoral associates who finished their terms
stayed in USTC, 7 of them were promoted to professors and/or PhD
advisors.

2. On July 24, 1995, the underground walk path (connecting the USTC
main campus and the northern section) was opened to public. It
cost Chinese Academy of Science 2.5 million yuan to build the
48 meter long tunnel (4 meter wide and 2.6 meter high).

3. 42 outstanding young student were accepted into the 95 gifted
and young class. They were selected from 680 students who took
the test. Their average score was 620.6. Zhang Zefeng from the
Suzhou Middle School got the highest score 665.5. Among the 42
students, there are 32 boys and 10 girls, the youngest was only
13.

4. From July 19 to 24, the 9th National Maths Competition for College
Students was held in Beijing. Jiang Xiaowei et al from 9200 formed
the only team from non-mathematical department. However, they won
the second team title and Jiang Xiaowei got the highest score among
the 38 participants from 23 top Chinese universities.

5. On July 18, 1995, the National News and Publication Agency granted
the permission for USTC to publish a new magazine: Education and
Modernization, it will be published every 3 months.

Academy. He is the chief scientist of the Hefei National Synchronize
Radiation Accelerator Laboratory.

7. USTC has accepted 1123 new undergraduate students for the 1995 class.
Their average score is 611.80. There are 180 female students and 44
students from 12 minority groups.

Association. He was also elected to be a overseas fellow of the Great
Britain Imperial Chemical Society this year.

9. From July 22 to 28, representatives from 16 top Chinese universities
(including Fudan U., Nanjing U., Zhejiang U. etc) came to Hefei to
attend the "9th Discussion Panel on Administrative Issues for 17 Major
National Universities". They discussed issues such as 211 projects,
education reform, fund raising etc. This discussion panel was started
in 1986, the member universities take turns to sponsor the meeting
each year.

10.To celebrate the National Teachers' Day(9/10), teachers from USTC
Wang Shui, Yu Changxuan, Zhang Yumin were honored with the title
"National Model in Education System" and "National Outstanding
Teacher". Huang Jihu, Shao Liangheng were awarded similar title
by the Anhui province.
