1. Fermi Lab Picnic and Ideas for Next Event ........................
---------------------------------------------------------------------
>From: USTC Alumni Association in Chicago Area
On May 20, 1995, we had a successful picnic at the Fermi Lab. A
total of 63 USTC alumni including their family members showed up. Not
only did we have a delicious BBQ lunch, the later visit to the Wilson
Hall and sandy valley-ball matches were also full of fun. Most people
had a good time on that gorgeous day. We also made a $48 profit from
this event, which will be used to cover the expenses of future
activities. By the way, if your kid lost a "machine gun" at the picnic,
please contact us.
We now call for ideas and suggestions for the next event. Two small-
scale activities are currently under consideration:
(1) Farewell party for Li Wenshuo (844): he has just got his Ph.D.
degree and is leaving for Cornell to pursue his MBA in late August. We
may have a boat tour of the Lake Michigan followed by a dinner and
karaoke party. The tentative time would be late July or early August.
(2) Seminar for New-coming Alumni: at around Mid-Autumn Festival.
We would have a party to greet new-coming USTC alumni. Senior alumni
could share their experience in USA and offer assistance to new
students. This event could be held at either University of Chicago or
Northwestern University.
If you have any ideas and/or comments, please do share with us. You
can email to

2. USTC Alumni Scholarship Update ...................................
---------------------------------------------------------------------
>From: Discussions in the USTC Bulletin Board and Mailing Lists
Since the open discussions about the establishment of a USTC Alumni
Scholarship to attract the best high school graduates to apply for and study
at USTC, first on the USTC BB and subsequently on the USTC mailing list,
a number of volunteers have started to work on this matter.
Dr. Zhang Shangyou (771) at the University of Delaware has created a
special mailing list for those alumni who are interested in this matter.
To subscribe to this mailing list, please send email to
chinese@cauchy.math.udel.edu
with the subject "signon ustc.fund"
We have discussed a number of issues about the proposed scholarship.
We need more volunteers and enthusiastic USTCers to join us in our further
discussion and subsequently in our fund raising activity among the USTC
alumni and others (only if possible). The following are some of the issues
we have talked about:
1) The scholarship is intended to attract the brightest high school
graduates to USTC. Hence the scholarship is a merit-based scholarship.
2) A rough estimate indicates that there are more 1500 USTC alumni
working or studying abroad. If each of us contributes $10 to $20 a year,
we can easily have about $20,000 for the scholarship. Translated to yuan,
it would be nearly 200,000 yuan each year, which could be sufficent to
support many outstanding students to start or continue their study at USTC.
3) A trust account will be set up with a bank and a volunteer accountant
will be chosen to manage the account. A special committed will be formed
as the board of trustees for this fund.
USTC Alumni, let's get united and do something great for USTC, let's
start from here.

During May 14-15, 1995, a business delegation from Harbin Municipal

offered generous assistance to this delegation. Especially, we would
like to acknowledge the efforts by Wang Zheng (864), Zhu Hui (817),
Wang Xin (8814), Rong Yan (8811) etc.
For detailed information on the business opportunities offered by
the Harbin delegation, please contact Wang Zheng (864).
