A section of a late 16 CNS stained with 1D4. Note that the outer fascicle has dark and light regions, and does not appear as a continuous, uniformly staining axon bundle. The other two fascicles (FN3 and MP1 ) are continuous. Note also that the posterior commissural bundle stains more darkly than at early 17.
