X-Ray Crystallography Facility

The XRCF is equipped with a PerkinElmer 2400 Series II CHN Elemental Analyzer for bulk sample analysis of carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen content in organic and organometallic compounds.

Approximately 3 mg of weighable material is needed for each analysis, which requires between 5 and 10 mg in the vial per analysis.

Anyone interested in determining the elemental composition of a compound should sign up on the EA Queue. An EA Submisison Form should also be downloaded, completely filled out (Adobe Acrobat is available through Caltech IMSS), renamed as Sample Number (column A in EA Queue)_last name and uploaded to the EA Sample Submisison folder.

If the sample is stable for at least a week they can be brought to the XRCF lab, BI 110. If the sample is air sensitive, arrangements need to be made with XRCF staff to transfer them into a glovebox either the day before or the morning of the expected analysis date.

Users are encouraged to prepare their own sample. Any samples prepared (weighted in the tins) by the submitter will not be charged for duplicate analysis, for up to three tins per compound.

At this time the facility schedules EA runs approximately every other week, or whenever we have at least 10 samples in the queue. Expected dates for samples analysis are listed on the queue. Users will be contacted the day before samples will be run. Samples that need to be run urgently (unscheduled) can be accommodated although additional charges may apply. If you have a sample that needs to be rushed please contact the director.
