PR Newswire - INSTANT REPLAY:
NIKE
& THE SWOOSH
INSTANT REPLAY:
NIKE
& THE SWOOSH
PR Newswire
:
Tuesday,

1998
BEAVERTON, Ore., Sept. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- The following is issued by
Nike
, Inc.:
It was widely reported at the first of the year that "Just Do It" was being retired. That was wrong (we will continue to use Just Do It and did in a girls soccer TV ad this summer). Today The New York Post reports that the Swoosh may be "semi-retired."
And Elvis is living in Detroit. Before this gets totally overblown, let us emphatically say we are not retiring the Swoosh, one of the best-known symbols of athletic performance products ever.
Here's what is happening: In January,
Nike
(NYSE: NKE) began using its wordmark, "
nike
" to sign off its advertising. We're also using it on our letterhead and business cards and other corporate representations. The Swoosh logo will continue to be used on our products and, at the same time, all of our sport category logos will have the Swoosh in them, for instance
Nike
ACG (All Conditions Gear) and
Nike
's Tennis logos both contain the Swoosh.
"It is the Swoosh that has brought us to prominence, and it isn't going away," said Gordon Thompson,
Nike
vice president of design. "The Swoosh will still be used in its most powerful form -- on product, representing specific athletic benefit. By having our wordmark on our stationary and in advertising, and logos for different sports categories, we're going to become a much more dynamic and vibrant company."
Nike
's first logo, in 1971, combined the Swoosh with a script "
nike
." The corporate logo (used in advertising and stationary) evolved again in 1978, 1985 and 1996. (For more information, visit www.
