Transcendence of special values of classical functions: behind the scenes

Paula Tretkoff (Texas A&M University)

Abstract

This lecture is a complement to my lecture in the Southern California Number Theory Day. We discuss the transcendence techniques that are behind the proofs of current results on the transcendence of values of classical functions at algebraic points. We focus on the exponential function, the modular function, and the hypergeometric function, in one and several variables. No knowledge of transcendence is needed to follow the talk, and students are encouraged to attend.
