Clozel observed that Arthur's global conjectures on the discrete automorphic spectrum of an adelic reductive group combined with the Burger-Sarnak restriction principle have some interesting and unexpected consequences for the unitary representations of the group over a local field. This talk will describe a simple approach to some special cases of this conjecture.
