11/14/99: No diplomacy in China vs. Netters

PRK-Netters 1-1 (Eichi, 35'; MVP: Bill)

(From our correspondent Michel de la Valleé-Noire) Caltech, Pasadena. This morning Phys. Rev. Netters tied their game against the Caltech Chinese team PRK, with a score of 1-1. Coming from two consecutive defeats, Netters looked upon this match as an occasion to turn the tables; but while PRK could count on a plentitude of players, Netters could barely gather a complete team of 11. Nevertheless, PRN were laudable in getting by with experience and determination when their energies began to fail them.

Much to the satisfaction of the commentators who had advocated such a move, today Captain Bill left the goalposts to energize almost every other region of the field. In the absence of Marc, he led PRN's defense through a careful and authoritative performance, blemished only by one goal (and only because fullback Michele was found out of position by a quick reversal). Bill was also very effective in the midfield and in occasional offensive forays, including a cunning free kick that however found PRK's goalie ready.

Even if this game saw a definite improvement in the quality of their play, Netters still displayed a worrisome deficit in their control of the ball, and above all in their ability to craft well-reasoned actions starting from their defense. Barring that, Netters could only sting with Eichi's sudden bursts and Peter's sideline runs; and that proved enough for one goal only. For a few minutes, it looked as if that goal would set the final result; but as PRK's pressure increased, their frustration turning into roughness, tired Netters eventually made the one mistake that cost them the victory.
