10/24/99: It's a battle! but Netters rule

PRN-Futbol DP 1-0 (Eichi, 35')

(From our correspondent Michel de la Vallée-Noire) Pasadena, CA. In the second match of the fall season, Phys. Rev. Netters beat today the Latino team Futbol DP, after an animated and entertaining game whose outcome was long uncertain. Quite unusually, both teams played with reduced ranks of nine, opening wide spaces for breath-taking counters and reversals, while showcasing the feats of the gifted and the strong-willed alike. For if PRN owe their goal to Eichi's distinctive deftness and brilliancy, the fullbacks and midfielders managed to keep PRN's goal unharmed, thanks to their tenacity and insistence in playing every single available ball and rebuffing every frenzied Hispanic initiative.

Many individual players deserve mention: Bill sacrificed himself as a goalie for the first half, and gave the team a much-needed offensive boost in the second; he was responsible for the finely crafted corner kick that Eichi stuck squarely into the net. Yuri was a great playmaker during the first half, when PRN created many scoring occasions, but were unfortunate in all; he took Bill's place as keeper in the second half. Wei was implacable in stealing balls and denying passage in the midfield. But above all we feel that Liz was this game's MVP: in the unfamiliar role of a fullback, she was everywhere on the field, as useful and effective in thwarting threats to PRN's goal as in supporting their attacks.

All in all, PRN proved today that teamwork and determination can defeat many obstacles, while showing off an appreciably improved physical condition. If PRN's growth continues on this track, who will ever stop them? (In the picture, courtesy of Reuter Sports, the nine PRN gladiators after defeating Futbol DP)
