What is "Tang Soo Do"

Tang Soo Do is a Korean Martial Art. As such, it is characterized by the high kicking that is typical of all Korean styles. Other influences are also present in this method of training. At the advanced levels, a Chinese influence becomes apparent as several circular kicks and hand techniques are taught. Also, the Hyungs (forms) are descendants of many of the Okinawan Kata that are taught in many Japanese styles. These influences show that this style has continued to improve and evolve into the well balanced martial art that it is today.

The words "Tang Soo Do" in and of themselves have a definite meaning. Literally translated, the "Tang" refers to the T'ang Dynasty of China, thus reflecting the shared cultural background between China and Korea (617-907 AD). "Soo" means hand, but it implies fist, punch, strike, or defense, etc. "Do" means way of life or art. Thus, "Tang Soo Do" means the Korean Martial Art which was influenced by the T'ang method of martial art. This is sometimes shortened to "The way of the T'ang Hand".
