Jazz is a dynamic, expressive form of dance marked by movement isolations and complex, propulsive polyrhythms. It is an outgrowth of African-American ragtime, jazz, spirituals, blues, work songs, and so forth and is considered an American dance style. Through warm-ups and exercises students learn proper body alignment, balance and syncopation. Musicality and performance skills are gained through the learning of dance combinations.

Lyrical Dance is a blending of ballet, jazz, and modern dance techniques. It is typically performed to contemporary music, deriving its name from the fact that dance movements express the lyrics and emotions of the music. Lyrical dance borrows much of its basic movements from ballet, but offers greater freedom of movement and expression.

This class will feature beginning-level jazz and lyrical styles of dance, and will focus on building core strength in the process. The class will be taught by Valerie Scott, a Caltech graduate student, and is free to everyone in the Caltech community. Valerie has choreographed multiple pieces for the Caltech Dance Show, and has taught similar classes for years.
