About the Technique

The Technique is published annually by the Caltech Graduate Student Council (GSC) for the Graduate Student Office. For new students, this book is a guide to life at Caltech and Los Angeles. For others, this is a reference to essential services and information. The Technique is distributed to incoming graduate students. Anyone else who wants a copy of the Technique should request it from the Graduate Student Office. The online Technique contains all the information in the print version. It also contains links to the online resources mentioned in the text, and allows reader input through discussion groups and comment posting features.

Legend and Keys

Four-digit numbers preceded by an x (e.g. x6049) are campus telephone extensions. Add prefix 395- when dialing from off campus. Four-digit numbers preceded by one number and an x (e.g. x4-6120) are JPL extensions. Phone numbers without an area code are within the local calling area of (626). Incomplete email addresses (e.g. abc@its) are used within the campus network. Add domain name caltech.edu when sending emails from a network off campus. Hyphenated numbers (e.g. 153-58) are campus mail codes. At Caltech, the second number is the building number, and the first number is the room number where mail is delivered, and at JPL, the first number is the building, and the second number is the room. If only one number is listed, it is the building number. Consult the map in the back of this book for more details. Off campus, Mapquest links are often included.
