Left couloir (aka Ice Nine) is the hardest ice climb
in the Sierra according to
our guidebook. The right couloir is the one that ends in the notch.
Both
were out of season and we opted for the right couloir.
J.,
on the snowy parts. Not much ice at all.
J.
Above this, the couloir was increasingly composed of a few
inches of snow on top
of rock. A bit tougher than we expected.
J.,
traversing from the exit of the couloir to the summit ridge.
S.,
on the summit ridge about 3 PM. We're about out of water. (photo: Jacob)

on fourth rappel. As S. rappelled afterward,
the sling pulled off the
block and S. fell, losing some gear,
breaking his helmet and getting bruised all
over.
After this, S. and J. descend 1,500', then ascend 2,000' to the
tent,
arriving dead tired at midnight. Ski out next day without having eaten for
nearly a day.
