Observing Party and Info Session
Sunday October 26, 2008 at 7pm:
      Caltech SEDS invites the Caltech community to view at Jupiter and other objects of the night sky with our 10in telescope. Practice observing, grab a bite to eat and meet others who have interest in astronomy and space exploration. The club officers will describe upcoming observing events and other Caltech SEDS activities and encourage participants to suggest additional events.
      Pizza and refreshments will be available starting at 7pm. If possible, please bring your own cups and plates to support campus sustainability. We will have cups and plates available as well. But, do you really need a plate to eat pizza? As long as there is an interest in observing, the telescope will remain setup on the lawn/pathways north of Beckman Auditorium on Caltech campus. This event is sponsored by the Graduate Student Council. The Meade LX200R telescope was purchased with contributions from the Moore-Hufstedler Fund and the Student Investment Fund. Observing Trip to Joshua Tree National Park
November 8-9, 2008
      Caltech SEDS will be going to Joshua Tree National Park for a full night of observing. We will leave Caltech around noon on Saturday and return before dinner on Sunday. Joshua Tree National Park is an excellent site for observing deep sky objects. Since the number of participants is limited, it’s also a great time to practice astrophotography. There’s an added bonus of fun day-time activities for those that are interested in hiking or climbing. The trip cost is $10, which goes towards gas, entrance fees, campsite fees, firewood, and food (dinner, hot beverages and snacks through out the night, breakfast, and Sunday lunch). Note that during November at Joshua Tree National Park the low night temperatures drop to 41 degrees. The number of participants is limited and we need drivers. Spots will be given based on the order of responses, with the exception of drivers. Email johannap@caltech to sign-up or for more information.
