The winners of the 5th Annual Voice Scholarship Competition, held on April 21st, are:

1st place: John Yong, graduate student in Biology
2nd place: Casey Glick, undergraduate student in Geochemistry
3rd place: Manwah (Lilian) Wong, graduate student in Mathematics

These individuals will perform for the Caltech community at this free recital. We are delighted that former competition winners, Shannon Browne and Steven Chemtob will be our guest singers.

5th Annual Voice Scholarship Competition

Beckman Auditorium (BA Rehearsal Room)
Begins at 6:30 pm

  • Competition will be held on Tuesday, April 21st from 6:30 to 9:30 pm in Beckman Auditorium (BARR). If you are not available on that day, you will need to make a special arrangement with the judges PRIOR TO the official competition date.
  • A piano accompanist will be provided.  Please bring legible music for the pianist. Photo copies, if used, should be two-sided.
  • Applicants must memorize music.
  • Applicants must present 2 arias/songs for the competition.  At least one aria must be of classical nature.
  • For the audition, professional attire is recommended. For the recital, formal attire is required.
  • Previous applicants are encouraged to compete again this year. Undergraduate and graduate students, and postdocs are welcome. Two-time winners may be considered for a guest appearance.
  • To be considered, please send an email to opera@caltech.edu. Please state in the subject line, "Voice Competition." In your message, please include your full name, status with Caltech, and Option. Also include your song selections. Email must be received by April 15th.
  • Awards: Up to four winners will be selected and awarded a monetary prizes of $400, $300, $200, and $100.
  • Winners will be required to perform at the Annual Voice Recital on May 5, 2009, in Dabney Lounge.
  • Judges: Olga Perez and Renee Sousa

Olga Perez is a first generation Cuban-American from New Orleans, Louisiana. In 2007, Ms. Perez made her debut as the title character in Carmen with Amarillo Opera. She participated in the Marion Roose Pullin Arizona Opera Studio Program during the 2007-2008 Season and has recently performed as Zerlina in Opera in the Heights production of Don Giovanni in Houston, Texas and as Der Komponist in Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos at Arizona State University’s Lyric Opera Theater.

Miss Perez has been a regular at Arizona Opera, where she has worked under the batons of conductors such as Cal Stewart Kellogg and Joel Revzen. There she has sung roles such as Mercedes in Carmen where her rich voice and performance was critically described in “smoky tones” and having performed “engagingly” as Tisbe in Cenerentola. Miss Perez was critically acclaimed as “impressive” in the role of Zita in New Jersey Opera Theater’s double-bill production of Gianni Schicchi and the East Coast Premiere of Michael Ching’s follow up: Buoso’s Ghost, conducted by Indianapolis Opera’s James Carraher.During the summer of 2005, Miss Perez sang the role of Marcellina for Opera Festival di Roma in their production of Le Nozze di Figaro.

Miss Perez has two Bachelor’s degrees in Vocal Performance and Music Education from Northern Arizona University and is currently pursuing a Master’s in Opera Theater at Arizona State University where she studies with Anne Kopta.

Soprano Renée Sousa is regularly seen performing with Los Angeles Opera.  Most recently, she was seen as a Noble Page in their production of Wagner's Tannheuser.  She was also a Lady Traveler in Manon and a Noble Orphan is Der Rosenkavalier.  Recently, she reprised the role of Kate Pinkerton in their performance of Puccini's Madama Butterfly.  Ms. Sousa has performed the role of Marguerite in Gounod's Faust with Pacific Repertory Opera in San Luis Obispo where the Tribune reported "her thrilling delivery of the 'Jewel Song' was the musical high point of the evening!"  Other operatic roles include Cio-Cio San in Madama Butterfly and Micaela in Carmen (Stockton Symphony); Lolette in La Rondine (Los Angeles Opera); Mimi in La Bohème (Arizona Opera); Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni (Santa Barbara Grand Opera); Alexandra in Regina (Opera Pacific); and the title role in Floyd's Susannah.

On the concert stage Ms. Sousa recently performed Russian Seasons by Leonid Desyatnikov with the Santa Cecelia Orchestra.  Other solo concert appearances include Beethoven's Choral Fantasy, Rodrigo's Ausencias de Dulcinea (Los Angeles Philharmonic); a Hollywood Bowl tribute to John Phillip Sousa (yes, she is related) with the American Winds; Mahler's Symphony No. 8 (William Hall Master Chorale); Mahler's Symphony No. 4, Songs of a Wayfarer; Rückert Lieder; Barber's Knoxville: Summer of 1915 and Brahms' Requiem.  Ms. Sousa performs regularly with the Desert Symphony and recently performed a concert with the Asian American Philharmonic.  She also appeared with Michael Feinstein at Carnegie Hall (Weill Hall) in a unique concert exploring the influence of classical music on popular music.
