Information on different orienteering formats:
Classic distances: The competitor has a certain series of controls they need to "punch." Fastest time through the course wins.
Score format: In score orienteering, each
competitor gets a limited time (usually 90 minutes) to find as many controls as possible. There are
no pre-set routes, and each person decides which controls they want to visit on
their own. Each control is worth a certain amount of points based on
difficulty, and most
points wins. Of course, score is also good for recreation, as each person
can choose their level of difficulty.
