Physics 161: Introduction to Chaos

Pictorial Renormalization Group

In this chapter demonstrations are used to introduce how the infinite sequence of period doubling bifurcations with geometric scaling properties can be understood in terms of the successive application of an operation built out of functional composition f(x)->f(f(x)) and rescaling. The example of the quadratic map is used, although the sine map or other maps with a quadratic maximum could also be used.
