Errors in the Text of
Phase Transitions in Materials
first edition, first printing 2014

by Brent Fultz

This web page identifies most all of the errors in mathematics and science. I take full responsiblity for these errors, and apologize for them. I have not listed misspellings and typesetting errors that the reader will recognize easily, or may not care about. Please mark the following changes in your copy of the first edition, first printing.

I would appreciate it if you would alert me to other errors like those listed here. I am at:

p. 17 Line 7 of Section 1.6.3: Change n+2 to n+1

p. 43 First line of section 4.3: change rate to rare.

p. 73 - problem 3.5: Change inner diameter that is negligibly small compared to To: inner diameter, b, that is small compared to Change is always c, and the concentration is To: is always c', and the concentration is

p. 91 - Equation 4.47: Change factor of 1/n to 1/Wn

p. 103 Between Eqs. 5.7 and 5.8: Change three instances of c/k to c.k (two of c0/k, one of c1/k)

p. 104 second paragraph line 6: This first solid had the composition cs = k c0

p. 142 Section 6.2.6 paragraph 2: change word less to more: For electronic properties [more] important than the total

p. 151 Eq. 6.98 Should have a 2 in numerator. Below Eq. 6.98 on p. 151, both instances of A=0 should be replaced with A=1

p. 200 footnote 1: Change constant n to constant N

p. 204: Figure 8.4 must be replaced because it is drawn incorrectly. This color figure works better, with blue and red equivalent to dark and light gray.

p. 229 Immediately before Eq. 9.67: add missing ) in: = [atoms/(cm2 s )])

p. 263 Figure 10.7: The horizontal labels of the two plots on upper right are incorrect, and should be those on the second line of the caption, in order from left to right rho_chi (E) and rho_{chi_i} (E)

p. 299 Between Eq. 12.2 and 12.3 Delete , minus f(c0) for the homogeneous alloy (because this is already subtracted in Eqs. 12.1 and 12.2)

p. 341 Eq. 14.30: Denominator needs extra ) for delta Delta ( r'' )

p. 359 Figure 15.5c: hcp labels should be A B A (not A B C)

p. 372 Eq. 15.21: There should be a square root of the argument of the log function, i.e., Change to: log(fraction expression)^1/2 (This has implications for equations 15.22-15.25 below.)

p. 372 and 373 - Equations 15.22 and 15.24: Change: 3 kB To: 3/2 kB

p. 373 - Equation 15.23: Multiply numerator by 2 to be: +2 kappa_2

p. 373 - Equation 15.25: Change: 3/2 To: 3/4

p. 394 - Equation 15.26: Missing x. Change: kappa_2^2 To: kappa_2 x^2

p. 376 - Equation 15.36: change two terms in () as: Change: 2 kappa_4^2 / kappa_6 To: 4 kappa_4^2 / 9 kappa_6 Change: - kappa_2 To: - 2 kappa_2

p. 382 - Equation 15.42 in problem 15.6: change: 2 kB To: kB (delete the 2)

p. 431 - Problem 17.7: Change: The different i - j To: The difference i - j

p. 457 - Equation 19.6: Change two instances of subscript AA to BB to be DE = N/2 [2eAB1 - eAA1 - eBB1 - 4eAB2 + 2eAA2 + 2eBB2]

p. 457 - Equations 19.8 and 19.9: Change second instances of subscript AA to BB to be: 4V1 = eAA1 + eBB1 - 2eAB1 and: 4V2 = eAA2 + eBB2 - 2eAB2

p. 490 - Equation 19.41: Change: (1+x^2)/2 To: 1 + x^2/2
