Computer-Controlled Sieverts Apparatus
The Caltech Sievert's apparatus is built from electrolytically-polished stainless steel tubing and VCR fittings. It is leaktight to hydrogen at pressures of 190 atm. An oil-free vacuum pumping system and research purity hydrogen gas are used with this system. The furnace, cooling fans, and three valves are under control of a Macintosh computer, which is also used for collection of pressure and temperature data. This apparatus permits automatic isotherm collection, although intervention is required when changing temperature. A number of isotherms obtained with this Sievert's apparatus have been published in archival journals, and these isotherms show excellent closure.
