Ma 151b, Algebraic and Geometric Topology

Winter 2009

Course Description

Math 151 is the year-long graduate sequence in topology and geometry. In the second term (151b), we will learn about cohomology, homotopy theory, and spectral sequences. The first two topics are covered in Chapters 3 and 4 of:

Allen Hatcher, Algebraic Topology, Cambridge University Press, 2002.

This is the same as the textbook from last quarter. You can download the full text here (errata here). Hatcher has also written a few chapters on spectral sequences (for a future book) which you can download here.

Please check this page for homework assignments and additional information.

Grading Policy

Weekly homework will be given out Friday and due the following Friday, except for the first assignment, which is due Monday, January 12th. One of the homework assignments will be replaced by a midterm. There will also be a final exam, which must be typed. Half your grade will be based on homework, and half on the exams. At least one homework assignment must be typed. (I recommend LaTeX.) Collaboration is encouraged on the homework, but is not allowed on the midterm or final.

Homework Assignments

All problem numbers refer to Hatcher's book. Homework assignments will be available here by the Monday before they are due.
