Rules

  • Players:
    • It is a mixed tournament.
    • Players of all levels welcome.
    • The majority of your team and in particular the team captain must be Caltech-affiliated.
    • Players can only play for one team.
    • Teams must have at least 8 players registered.
  • Game Structure:
    • Games will be best of 3 sets (but limited to 1 hour 15 minutes)
    • If a set is stopped due to time running out, the team that is at least two points ahead wins the set. If no team is at least 2 points ahead, play will continue until one team reaches this margin.
    • Each set is first to 25 points subject to the restriction that the team must be at least two points ahead or else play continues until this is the case.
  • League Scoring:
    • The league scoring system will be
      • 4 points for a 2:0 win
      • 3 points for a 2:1 win
      • 2 points for a 1:2 loss
      • 1 point for a 0:2 loss
      • 0 points for a bye
      • -1 points for a forfeit (and team will be considered lower ranked than teams with the same point total)
    • Forfeits are unacceptable and will be punished according to the rules above. Multiple forfeits will cause the team to be removed from the competition under the discretion of league organisers.
  • Volleyball Rules:
    • Any volleyball rules dispute will be settled by Konrad.
    • Standard FIVB volleyball rules apply. The only exceptions are listed below:
      • A ball striking the ceiling or some fixed piece of infrastructure attached to the ceiling directly above the court is still considered 'in play' as long as it does not cross the plane of the net after this event or between the last contact with a player and this contact with the ceiling.
      • If any team captain requests a no-kicking rule, then it is to be enforced by both teams.
      • In general, games are likely to be played according to 'recreational rules' which tend to relax certain volleyball laws such as 'double touch' or 'catch and throw' rules. If this is agreed between team captains then the league organisers will not enforce a higher level of volleyball rules rigour.
    • Certain rules are non-negotiable:
      • All players must wear court shoes appropriate to volleyball.
      • No player may interfere with an opposition player through/under/over/around the net.
      • Volleyball rules of net touch and penetration will be strictly enforced. A player who offends on these rules will be warned and if the behaviour does not improve may be removed from the game.
      • A team that presents 5 or less players automatically forfeits one set every ten minutes after official game start time.
  • Code of Conduct:
    • All players are to behave in a courteous manner.
    • Volleyball can be a dangerous game, so be mindful of others around you as well as stray balls. Be careful to adequately warn others of potential injury in cases where you believe this may occur.
    • All decisions regarding code of conduct violations will be made by league organisers in an appropriate manner.
    • Attempting to injure a player or unwanted physical contact will mean immediate suspension from the league indefinitely.

League Information
