General Course Information

The second half of Ph 106b and all of Ph 106c are devoted to electricity and magnetism.  We will largely follow the book by Griffiths, beginning with Chapter 2, "Electrostatics". I am assuming that the material in Chapter 1 , "Vector Analysis", is familiar to you.  There are numerous good E&M texts out there; Heald and Marion, Jackson, etc. Some of these will be placed on reserve in SFL.  Throughout the course I will introduce topics and material that is not covered well (or at all) in Griffiths. 

 

Homework: Due at 4pm on Fridays. Turn in 149 Bridge Annex. Graded sets can be picked up in the same place.

Late Homework Policy: You may turn in your homework up to 1 week late for 50% credit; beyond that no credit will be given unless prior arrangements have been made. 1 week late means by 4pm on the Friday following the one on which the set was originally due.  You do not need to consult me or the TA's for this. 

If you wish to request a longer extension, please contact me, preferably before the set is due.  Extensions require a good excuse (family or health emergency, etc). A letter from the Dean, a health official, resident head, etc., may be required.

You are welcome to turn in partial homework sets, either on time or within the 1 week late period.  However, you may not turn in some problems on time and some late; the late ones will not be accepted. In other words, for each problem set, you have one shot at turning in your work; judge for yourself how best to maximize your grade.

There is one "free late" for problem sets for the entire winter term of Phys 106b.  If you already used it in the mechanics portion of the course, you cannot do so again.

Attendance:  You are strongly urged to attend class regularly.  There will be material presented in class which is neither in the book nor on the homework.  Such material is likely to appear on the exams and/or the homework.

Grading: Grades in Ph106b will be determined 50/50 from the Mechanics and E&M halves of the course.  For the latter, the homework will count for 50% and the final exam 50%.

Exams: All exams in Physics 106b and 106c will be take-home style. You may consult your text (Griffiths), your class notes and graded problem sets and solutions posted on this website. If you missed a class you may use the notes taken by another willing student. No other written material may be consulted. No electronic symbolic math engines (e.g. Mathematica) may be used during the exam.
