Caltech Beavers Capture IAHL Division II Title

March 11, 2001

The Caltech Ice Hockey Club captured the IAHL (Iceon Adult Hockey League) title for the 2000-01 season by defeating the Chiefs 4-2 in the Finals. Caltech had been winless in all of their previous meeting against the Chiefs, however, rose to the occasion on the game that counted most.

The Chiefs opened the game with the initial offensive momentum, applying heavy pressure in the Caltech zone. Chiefs team captain Jacques Lambert had the best chance, but a glove save by Caltech goalie Biff Yamazaki kept the game scoreless.

Later in the period, a rush by grad student Adam Olsen opened the scoring, and the teams finished the first period with a 1-0 score. Grad student Dean Holunga added to the lead with a slap shot from the left high slot that beat the Chiefs' netminder Jiro Wada.

Faced with a 2-0 deficit, the Chiefs dominated in the offensive zone in the first part of the third period with a wrap-around goal by Chris Holden to cut the lead to 2-1. Then midway into the period, grad student Alex Tobias beat Wada on a dump in to the right corner, and from a near impossible angle, beat Wada, struggling to return to the crease.

Mark Guman (JPL) tightened the lead with a one time slap shot from the left slot, to cut Caltech lead to 3-2, but an empty netter from Hafen McCormick with 20 seconds left sealed the win for Caltech.
