Here are the basic instructions for obtaining and installing
the latest Windows patches and updates:

0)  Close all applications.  Log on to the computer with an
    account having administrative privileges.

1)  Run Internet Explorer (not Netscape). 

2)  Select the menu item,

      Tools|Windows Update

    or alternatively, access the Microsoft website,

      http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
  
3)  The Microsoft Windows Update webpage will appear.  Click on
    the link to "Scan for Updates".  The results will identify
    three categories of updates,
    
      Critical Updates and Service Packs
      Windows 2000/XP
      Driver Updates

    I suggest installing all Critical Updates.  Other Windows
    and Driver Updates should be installed only if they address
    specific error conditions encountered on a symptomatic PC.
    Consult your Systems Administrator for advice about your local
    conditions. 

4)  Some updates require further updates.  So repeat the
    procedure until all updates are applied.

5)  Windows Updates can be scheduled for automatic installation
    from Control Panel|System.
