Our lab scanner can be used with a variety of different software
packages which are installed on Gaba.  The single, quickest way
to accomplish any scanning task is to use the HP PrecisionScan Pro
package.

Perhaps the most difficult scanning activity is optical character
recognition (OCR).  Here are three methods for converting a
character-based image into text which can edited in a Word
document. 

  Method 1:  Use the HP PrecisionScan Pro program

    1)  Start|Programs|HP ScanJet Software|HP PrecisionScan Pro
    2)  Scan|Preview
    3)  Select the area of interest with the mouse selection.
    4)  Output Type|Text
    5)  Use either of the following:
          a)  Scan|Scan To
          b)  Scan|Save As

  Method 2:  Use the Microsoft Office Document Imaging program

    1)  Start|Programs|HP ScanJet Software|
          Microsoft Office Document Imaging|mspview.exe

        This runs the program, 
          C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\
            MSPaper\mspview.exe.

    2)  File|Scan New Document.
    3)  Choose to scan the document with your preferred settings. 
    4)  File|Recognize Text Using OCR.
    5)  File|Send Text to Word.

  Method 3:  Use the OCR Button on the Scanner

    1)  Press the button on the scanner, which is labeled, OCR.
    2)  File|Send Text to Word.


The five front panel buttons on the scanner are configured so that
any scanning task can be invoked by pushing a button.  The buttons
are labeled on the front panel.  The legend is,

  Scan1        - Windows Scanners and Cameras
  Color Copy   - HP Copy Utility (send to Quadriceps PCL)
  OCR          - Optical Character Recognition using 
                   Microsoft Office Document Scanning (mspview.exe)
  Photoshop    - Adobe Photoshop 7 
  Scan2        - HP PrecisionScan Pro 2
   
Please refrain from reprogramming the buttons.  They are
reconfigured using,

  Control Panel|Scanners and Cameras 
    Hewlett-Packard ScanJet 6300C Properties


From Photoshop 7, you have two options for File|Import,
  HP PrecisionScan Pro 2
  WIA Hewlett-Packard ScanJet 6300C


Notes on installation for Windows XP Pro

  Download, install update to "Scan to" software
  Loosen permissions on,
    C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP PrecisionScan
