The GSC kept busy during the summer months.

Continuing our work on the spring 2011 Quality of Life survey, this summer was spent on analyzing the data and writing up the results to share them with you the graduate students and the Caltech Administration. In August, the GSC Steering Committee met with the Vice President of Student Affairs, the Deans, the Chair and Vice Chair of the Faculty Board and the Career Development Center to discuss some of the findings. There is a plan for a graduate student –faculty mini conference in the winter term to discuss some of the findings regarding advisor relationships. Our goal is to conduct this survey biannually in order to assess the climate on campus and help us serve you better. Look out for an announcement this month for this year’s report to you!

The GSC also contribution in organizing this year’s Orientation program- the committee meet weekly starting in June! In July, we conducted the search for graduate student representatives for the different faculty committees (for a list of the faculty committees go to oof.caltech.edu). In collaboration with Student Affairs we started GSC Club registration to facilitate club creation, communication between clubs and graduate student population and streamline GSC’s club funding procedure. We’ve also been working on publications- the Meander you’re now reading and hoping that you will enjoy it

The GSC Board of Directors elections and Officer elections took place on September 14th and September 29th respectively. I have now stepped down from the position of Chair but a new Steering Committee is now in place to continue GSC programming and support; for a complete list of our members please see gsc.caltech.edu/members.
