GSC Academics Commitee Update

by Allison Kunz

Advocacy has been working on the Bootcamp Program. The Math Workbook is now available for download from the GSC Academics page. There will also be 10 Useful Skills lectures spread out over the next year, ranging from bicycling in Pasadena to Scientific Computing in C++.

The Graduate Student Council Bootcamp program enables graduate students to help teach other graduate students:

Math Bootcamp: a review (or crash course) of general calculus, linear algebra, and ACM100-type math skills. A handy workbook is available for download from the GSC web site. Office hours and free food will be offered from 7:30-9:30pm in 214 Steele, M-F during the first week of classes.

Useful Skills Lectures: all those wonderful skills that never get formally presented in a class, or a nice condensed overview of things people may have forgotten over the years. Matlab, Mathematica, Python, and LaTeX are some of the lectures being offered this year! The lecture schedule is still TBD.

Cool Things Lectures: because some topics are just really interesting and deserve to be shared. Anything goes: "the science of chocolate" or "the biophysics of SCUBA." The lecture schedule is still TBD.

Also feel free to join the new bootcamp@caltech.edu EMAIL LIST, which will help with organization and collaboration on grad-student-led lectures.
