Welcome to The Meander!

Welcome to the new issue of our graduate newsletter The Meander. Yes, we have a name now (and that too without anything related to the word “tech”)! In fact the reason why we have this name is simply this. We want this magazine to be a forum where the Caltech graduate students can express, write, draw, say, think, paint, share, click or do whatever they wish to. In a way this magazine is the ticket for us to "meander-out" of our technical discussions about the science that we do in the lab. Still, if we want to talk about it, we can "meander-in" again, but in a language that even the schools on the east coast can understand.

This new issue brings with itself a new energy, a new avatar of our magazine. This time, we have tried to allocate sections for various activities and interests that the graduate students at Caltech pursue, so as to increase the diversity of articles that we read. As indicated before, in this issue, we have articles on Chinese medicine and West Coast Swing that help us "meander-out" and on the other hand we have stories of biofuels and Big Bang re-ionization to make us "meander-in." You will see how the Caltech engineers and scientists "metamorphosed" in the theatre and also how the recent graduates were not afraid to try something new as a part of their career. We are also introducing a new section welcoming new members to the Caltech Family, which we all are a part of. In this section we display photographs of spouses and kids of the fellow members of our family to share the happiness. As always, we have the photography/travel section still in place to display the cool pics clicked by some of us.

We are very excited to have new ideas, thoughts and opinions to be brought forward and made known to the community. The ‘Letters to the Editor’ section will be introduced in the next issue, continuing in this direction. We invite the graduate student family that we all are an inseparable part of to enjoy this new Meander. Feel free to share with us your experiences and stories that will facilitate our journey of "meandering in and out" while we are at Caltech.
