Announcements
· Social activism speaker: excellent talk but unfortunately not many graduate students present. But (as opposed to previous talks) there was enough advertisement.
· International week went well. We spend ~$200 for 3 clubs for the international day.
· The commencement speaker has finally been decided:
b.
Catalina Housing update
· General stuff: there’s a new big screen (55”) TV in the North Rec room; maintenance has been done in all the rec rooms; all apartments in the central cats will receive new carpeting.
· Past activities: on 4/30 they had a movie night with ~35 attendants; a trip to see wildflowers was cancelled as was a foosball tournament (because only 1 team registered); on 4/29 the CHCC cosponsored Xmas in April with the Y – unfortunately only 1 person went.
· New activities: an auto-clinic on 5/6 in the parking structure; 5/14 trip to see “champions on ice” in Anaheim (21 persons signed up); a table tennis tournament is planned for 5/20 and a movie night for 5/28.
· Issues: one position on the CHCC will open up (Martin is leaving); the CHCC will hold another survey among the residents in October; in the rec rooms no smoke machines are allowed – the GSC should make sure that the parties we sponsor respect that as well as the quiet hours.
c.
TA awards
Thanos will send out announcements and nomination forms this week
d.
Term party
On 5/6 in the North Catalina rec room. Alex is in charge. There will be a live band. Alex needs help to get the food and soft drinks. Serena volunteers.
e.
ASCIT/GSC Formal
Will be in the Ritz-Carlton Huntington on 5/26. ASCIT signed the contract an got the final menu for the dinner. The name has been changed to “Masquerade Ball”. A general announcement will go out next week.
f.
Beach Trip with ASCIT
On 5/13, maybe to Zuma beach (but not clear if we can BBQ there). ASCIT contributes $1000, the Y $400 towards this event. The money goes all into transportation and food. They expect about 250 people. The GSC votes unanimously to give $200, maybe we will increase that amount if a lot of graduates join for the trip.
g.
Quickfunding
We had 3 requests for quickfunding during last month:
· An Hawaian Easter party on 4/22
· An Easter party on 4/23
· Midterm party on 4/29
We gave each one $250; except for the second one all were well attended
h.
Meeting with Tim Downes
Fok and Tobias met with Tim Downes. Fok wishes that there were more turnouts for these meetings, as he doesn’t know of al the problems/concerns we have. In other words if something concerning athletics is on your mind, please come to these meetings or at least let the Sportszar know. Two topics were discussed:
· Beach volleyball: Tim will pass it on and maybe we’ll get a field (on the Northfield)
· Music in the gym: Tim waits for our input. Tobias is in charge to get input from students and figure out which radio stations they want to listen to.
i.
Technique update
Marco and Catherine met with the Technique editors. They have started updating the technique. There will be new section on car rental and infant care. They also need a section on the GSC. You get paid to write it! (Any volunteers?). More reviews for doctors, dentists, and hairdressers are also needed.
French on 5/5 and Italian on 5/17.
Steve will take charge of this one on 6/2.
The Alumni association has asked whether we would like to present the GSC by means of a poster at the Alumni day on 5/20. Nobody really wants to do it.
The GSC league soccer final will be played on 5/21. As last year we will have a BBQ in order to attract a crowd and reward the players. Claude will be in charge.
On 6/7 organized by the grad office. We need to make a speech/gift/… Magali will check what kind of present we could make. Please let her know if you have any ideas.
Claude will take care of updating email aliases, allocating the flyer task force and email distribution.
