I.     PRELIMINARY BUSINESS

a.      Introduction of guests

Tim is here from the Scuba Club to propose an NSO event.

b.     Additions to the agenda

None.

II.     APPROVAL OF MINUTES

The July minutes are approved with 1 abstention (Mike Fleming).

III.     CURRENT ISSUES

  1. Scuba club orientation event

Tim distributes a handout with the Scuba club proposal. They want to take the incoming students to Catalina on the Saturday of the NSO week to do some snorkeling. Any money we contribute would help sponsor the ferry ride to the island. The proposal asks for “as much money as we can afford”. The board points out that any such money needs to come out of the NSO budget. Apparently Nick has some money left in his budget. The board votes to appropriate up to $480 to this event (depending on the money left and on the participation of incoming students); there are 3 abstentions (Steve, Catherine, Claude)

  1. NSO update

Nick couldn’t make the meeting but everything seems to be under control.

  1. Summer term party

The party will be this upcoming Saturday at 8pm. The DJ is set. For the rest it’s the usual stuff: we still need volunteers to help clean up.

  1. Gradiators

Everything is prepared. However Bob is still looking for some referees. Will is trying to get some alumni to help with this.

  1. BoD retreat

A retreat is planned at Capra ranch for August 26. Details to follow.

  1. Emailing postdocs

We want to invite more postdocs to our events. Everyone should try to find out  about how to forward emails to postdocs in his/her option.

IV.     ANNOUNCEMENTS

a.      Past month activities

The Latino GUSH was a big success.

b.     Catalina Housing update

·       The waiting list for the Catalina apartments is down to 50 people. There are also about 20 spots off-campus.

·       The Catalinas are looking into installing DSL service for individual apartments. The cost would be $25 per month and resident with no installation fee. About a dozen people are interested.

·       They had a ballroom dance party last Friday. Approximately 30 persons showed up.
