1. Introduction of Guests

1. Announcements
• We have two JPL tours with 40 people each on Oct 22 and Nov 5. Over 90 students signed up so there’s a waiting list. The GSC will pay for part of the lunch, the Alumni Association picks up the rest.
• As last year the GSC gets $10000 in funding from CABS (Campus Auxiliary and Business Services). The money should be used "to build a graduate student community on campus".
• We had a small discussion about the convocations committee. Since the proposed speakers for commencement are confidential the discussion is not reported here. Piet just noted that while our suggestions will be taken into account there are a lot of other voices (undergrads, public relations,….) and president Baltimore has the final say.
2. Catalina Housing Update
• The survey is ready on the Catalina website. They will repeat the survey once a year and hope to get suggestions for events and improvements out of it. The residents were supposed to fill out the survey by Oct 18.
• Last month CHCC organized a hearts tournament (16 participants) and they helped with the NSO party where they bought wine and beer.
• Starting now the Catalina events will be announced online (and scheduled longer in advance).
• We discussed Tim’s answer to our proposal (his letter). Piet checked with the HR department and apparently there’s no legal problem in having the kind of position we want (one year positions after which people need to reapply). Everyone on the current CHCC agreed to open his position – but this might not be the case in the future and we should still try to get this sorted out with Tim. There’s a meeting between Tim, Linda and the CHCC and they will talk about this issue.
3. NSO report

The free food / free drinks events on campus were (as expected) the most attended. The off campus trips were unfortunately not quite so successful. We went about $500 over budget

4. Party report

The party was well attended, even though it was mostly undergrads dancing. Towards the end it was dying down but most of the evening was ok. Somehow we need to make the grads stay longer as most of them just drop in for a short time. The undergrads did not show up to do the cleaning (as they had promised). The DJ did a good job, but we decide not to give him a fixed contract for the rest of the year (but he can do it again of course). We also had to pay $150 extra for the lights inside. We need security guys, especially if we have non graduate students attend. We also had 2 bartenders (at $200 each) from the Ath. The cost of the party was $900 fgor the GSC, $600 paid by the undergrads, $350 paid by the Y and $200 paid by the undergrad dean. For future parties the undergrads will not be able to give us too much money. We will talk about this again next time when George is present.

1. Clubfunding

We voted on the clubfunding for each club. The total amount of $9690 (and the money for each of the 23 clubs) was unanimously approved.

2. ClubGUSH

The Caltech C will organize the ClubGush for October (Oct 15) and for November OASIS has agreed to do it.

3. Wine Tour

The winetour is tentatively scheduled for November 13. Giorgio Isella and Claude are organizing.

4. Ice Skating

Ying is organizing an Ice-Skating outing for November 14.
