"Segregation of binary mixtures of granular materials under shear"
A.Karion and M.L. Hunt

Many industrial and natural processes involve granular flow of materials with varying grain sizes. This research focuses on the effect of shearing particles with a large difference in grain size, which few studies have previously investigated. Results from two-dimensional soft-particle computer simulations of particles in a Couette flow without gravity are presented. The mixing and heat dissipation in these flows have been quantified for various solid fractions and solid fraction ratios. Heat dissipation results compare well to kinetic theory results for identical rough disks. Some migration of large particles away from the boundaries of the channel occurred. The effect of electrostatic charge on these binary flows was observed as well.
