Syllabus

We will cover the basic theory of classical algebraic geometry. Topics will include affine and projective varieties, morphisms, dimension, and tangent spaces.

Announcements

The official textbook for the course will be Algebraic Geometry by Robin Hartshorne. However, I will not be following it that closely, so if you do not intend to continue with 130b (or c), you could reasonably decide not to purchase this text. There are many books that cover essentially all of the material I plan to cover this quarter. I have put a bunch of them on reserve at the library. Also, there are several introductions to algebraic geometry freely available on the web. I recommend the notes of Olivier Debarre, with the warning that they are in French. Or for an English reference, you can try these which are also quite good, but not as close to what I plan to cover. (Also, there are many more that can be found online - if you find one that you like, please tell me about it.)
