A fundraiser for our friend, Pitt Kinsolving, was held at the Coffee Gallery Backstage in Altadena 8/20/12, featuring The Witcher Brothers. It was a wonderful show, attended by Pitt, and a solid sum was raised. Pitt's needs will continue. Find an update here.

The Caltech Folk Music Society has become the Pasadena Folk Music Society, a 501(c)(3) Nonprofit organization! We will have the same great shows at Caltech with the same low prices. Tickets will continue to be sold at the Caltech Ticket Office. We'll be in transition for a little while (website, email address, etc), but if you aren't on our email list, be sure to sign up to be notified about each concert. Write the Folk Music Society at

And by the way, all of our concerts are held after Caltech business hours, so parking in the school lots is free!

Saturday, May 9, 2015 at 8:00 p.m. in Beckman Institute Auditorium (building 74 on the map)

Admission: $20, with $5 for Caltech students and children.
Tickets may be obtained from the Caltech Ticket Office. For information, call (626) 395-4652.

We welcome the return of the fine young band, RUNA for their second appearance at Caltech. Led by step-dancer, Shannon Lambert-Ryan, who was nominated for Best Female Vocalist (individual/trad.) in the 2012 and 2013 Irish Music Awards, RUNA was nominated for best song, Amhran Mhuighinse (Somewhere Along the Road) in the World/Traditional category at the 12th Annual Independent Music Awards. These excellent musicians hail from Ireland, Canada, and the United States.

"There is truly a mystical quality to their playing. They create a lyrical sound that is at once unique as well as seamless," writes Lori Lander Murphy, Irish Philadelphia. RUNA draws on the diverse musical backgrounds of its band members and offers a contemporary and refreshing approach to traditional and more recently composed Celtic material. Through their repertoire of both highly energetic and graceful, acoustic melodies, along with their fusion of music from Ireland, Scotland, Canada, and the United States, this vocal and instrumental ensemble gives its arrangements of traditional songs and tunes a fresh sound.

Best of all, RUNA sounds like no one else," writes Travis Rogers, Jr. of Music Life and Times. Members of RUNA have played with Solas, Riverdance, Slide, Clannad, Fiddlers' Bid, Moya Brennan, Eileen Ivers, Hazel O'Conner, Full Frontal Folk, Keith & Kristyn Getty, Barco Teada, and the Guy Mendilow Band. RUNA consists of vocalist and step-dancer, Shannon Lambert-Ryan of Philadelphia, Dublin-born guitarist, Fionan de Barra, Cheryl Prashker of Canada on percussion, Dave Curley on mandolin, vocals, bodhran and step-dancing, and Maggie Estes on the fiddle. The band won several awards at the 2010 Montgomery Buck Music Awards, including Best Entertaining Band, Best Folk Artist, Best Female Vocalist, and Best Album Jealousy. Jim Allford of PA Music Scene writes, "The band is going to be reckoned with and I really feel they are Grammy bound within time."

Bill Margeson, of Irish American News wrote about their newest CD, Current Affairs, " shows the band at its current best. And, that best is mighty good. The band’s personnel is an international gumbo of an Irish group. It’s a quintet, and it’s terrific, blending wonderful vocals with really exciting instrumentals. This is their fourth album, and it includes a full variety of tempos, timings and fresh approaches to the auld’ music. Runa is young, fresh and exciting. Extremely high level of creativity meets a really high level of musicianship and understanding of the tradition. We love Runa. Get this CD!!” We say, don't miss them!

Unfortunately, as of March 20, Old Blind Dogs has had to cancel their 2015 U.S. Tour, including their May 9 show in Pasadena!

Due to considerable delays by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Old Blind Dogs were unable to get their immigration permit cleared in time for the tour, which was to begin August 23. The hope now is that clearance will soon come and that they can be pre-approved for a tour in 2016. We will keep you posted on this. Meanwhile, we have been able to book the Celtic music group, RUNA for a return show on the May 9 date, so we will still have a fine concert to offer! See above for details. If you have already purchased tickets for Old Blind Dogs, contact the Ticket Office at (626) 395-4652 to either exchange OBD tickets for RUNA tickets or to get a refund. Obviously, we are all upset and disappointed after much anticipation of the return of Old Blind Dogs, and we apologize for not being able to present them as planned.

Bryan Bowers
Saturday, May 30, 2015 at 8:00 p.m. in Beckman Institute Auditorium (building 74 on the map)

Admission: $15, with $5 for Caltech students and children.
Tickets may be obtained from the Caltech Ticket Office. For information, call (626) 395-4652.

Though other talented folks have followed in his footsteps, Bryan Bowers continues to be the pinnacle of autoharp playing in the folk music world, and he delivers a fine mix of songs, instrumentals, and stories. Six years have slipped by since his last visit here, as we could never coordinate a date that fit with his annual visit to California for the California Autoharp Gathering in the Fresno area in May. We found a way this year and we're proud to welcome Bryan back.

Born in Yorktown, Virginia, Bryan was profoundly affected by the singing of field and railroad workers, and this style of singing is an important part of his sound. It wasn't until college that he took up playing the autoharp, but he quickly became a master of the instrument that he has redefined over the years. He is as important to modern autoharp playing as Earl Scruggs has been to the banjo. In his hands, the autoharp has amazing capabilities of notes and chords, and his playing brings to mind a full orchestra, with its full-bodied and varied sound. He mixes a few original songs with some gospel, traditional, and songs of current songwriters, many of them very funny, such as "Zen Gospel Singing." Bryan's humor, easy manner, and natural storytelling abilities make his performances a pure delight.

Susie Glaze and the Hilonesome Band
Saturday, June 13, 2015 at 8:00 p.m. in Beckman Institute Auditorium (building 74 on the map)

Admission: $15, with $5 for Caltech students and children.

Susie Glaze & The Highlonesome Band are coming back for a fourth appearance at Caltech! They have been likened to the classic British bands Pentangle and Fairport Convention in that they blend classic folk music with rough-edged stories of tragedy and fate, all with orchestral arrangements sounding like chamber music gone folk! A lush newgrass Americana folk fusion quintet presenting gorgeous eclectic blends of mountain folk and exciting new grassy and Celtic-inspired originals, all with the remarkable voice of Susie Glaze. Their most recent studio CD White Swan was released in March of 2013 to critical acclaim from No Depression, FolkWorks, Pop Matters, M Magazine for Musicians, Music News Nashville and FolkWords UK among others, and it has been charting in the Top 50 on the Roots Music Report's Combined Internet and Terrestrial Folk Chart since it's release in March of 2013. Susie Glaze has been honored to be included on the newly-released Compass Records tribute album Dear Jean - Artists Celebrate Jean Ritchie alongside such artists as Judy Collins, Pete Seeger, Janis Ian, Tim O'Brien, John McCutcheon, Robin and Linda Williams and many more.

They have a brand new recording coming out this spring, Not That Kind of Girl, that is produced by Herb Pedersen (Loafer's Glory, Dillards, and many other great bluegrass projects) and features Herb and Chris Hillman (former member of the Byrds, Flying Buritto Brothers among other groupings) on one track. They will undoubtedly perform a good sampling from this recording at this Caltech show. Don't miss this chance to hear some great songs, old and new! Here are a few things being said about Susie Glaze and the Hilonesome Band:

"The best new band I've never heard of!" - Dan Crary
"…does something with a song that only great singers can do..." KCSN, Northridge, CA,
"One of the most beautiful voices in bluegrass and folk music today." KPFK's FolkScene

"Her singing is impressive at all ranges…" Bluegrass Unlimited
"The band is tight, great picking, and beautiful vocals and harmony." Che Greenwood, KVMR, Nevada City, CA
"She held the audience in the palm of her hand…." Scott Valley Bluegrass Festival

The Caltech Folk Music Society is a non-profit organization with all money collected going toward paying performers and for mailings and other expenses.

About the Pasadena Folk Music Society...

Graduate students, Brian Toby and Simon Davies, formed a Caltech student organization, the Caltech Folk Music Society, in 1983. The intent was to bring well-known performers of acoustic music from around the country, and around the world, to play at Caltech for a reasonable price. Long before playing "unplugged" became fashionable, the CFMS began to seek out a wide range of singer-songwriters, bluegrass bands, British Isles music, blues, Nueva Cancion, guitarists, and a whole array of other musicians that did not fit well into mainstream musical categories. While some of these performers emphasize elements of "folk tradition," others are boldly innovative and truly unique. Social activism, humor, and compassion are commonly present as well. In 2013, the Society became a 501(c)(3) organization and the name was changed to the Pasadena Folk Music Society. Concerts continue to be held at Caltech in the Beckman Institute Auditorium. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please contact to find out more.
