USFA Results, 2001-2002
11/4/01: Five time Luxembourgian national champion Cedric Anen flaunts his unrated status in the USFA by joining a 'C and under' tournament. Needless to say, he dominates the competition. Cedric 'earns' his C01 rating in foil.
Foil (C1, 32 competitors): Cedric Anen, 1st (C01)
11/11/01: Cedric and Tiago Wright show up to Orange Coast to fence foil and saber, respectively. Cedric moves up from his sandbagging C01 to a sandbagging B01. Tiago misses getting a E01 rating in saber by 2 touches, losing 15-13 to a 'B' rated fencer, Alfred Lara.
Foil (B1, 16): Cedric, 1st (B01)
Saber (E1, 12): Tiago Wright, 2nd
11/18/01: Competing on next to no sleep after driving back from J. Tree, Tiago shows up to his first PCS event.
Saber (B1, 19): Tiago, 14th
11/25/01: The annual 'White Elephant' tournament organized by the friendly folks from Conejo consisted of an open foil event followed by a mixed teams event. Caltech fielded three out of the eight teams, along with two 'defectors' (Cedric to UCI and Abraham Kuo to Conejo). The event was fun, and hopefully Conejo will run it again next year.
Foil (B1, 27): Abraham Kuo, 12th, Haomiao Huang, 24th
Mixed Team Event (8): (Mike Tiffany, Abe, Laura Johnson), 1st; (Cedric, Rob Cox, Jessica Johnson), 2nd; (Randy Paffenroth, Andrea McColl, Tiago), 3rd; (Haomiao, Melinda Owens, Augusto Roman), 7th; (Viet Ngo, Eric Cady, Rossana), 8th
12/2/02: Joe Nemanick, Cedric, Tiago, Bonnie Mak, and Abe show up at Orange Coast to fence all three weapons, and end up taking home four medals. Tiago and Abe slug it out in the round of 4 in the saber, with Tiago winning 15-13 after about 180 simultaneous calls, then Bonnie drops the dead-tired Tiago for gold. Abe earns his D01 in epee by placing 7th, and, in a shocker, Cedric wins the foil tourney.
Foil (E1, 11): Cedric, 1st, Joe Nemanick, 7th
Epee (A1, 23): Abe, 7th (D01)
Saber (E1, 12): Bonnie Mak, 1st, Tiago, 2nd, Abe, 3rd
12/9/02: Joe, Bonnie, and Abe go down to San Diego for their three weapon open. Abe cons Joe into fencing epee for the first time in order to make the 15 person cut-off required for a B1 tournament, and Joe comes within one touch of earning an E01 in epee -- losing 15-14 to Abe. Joe vows to never drive Abe to a fencing meet again. Bonnie came in third in the saber, and Abe came in third in both the foil and epee, earning him a C01 in epee.
Foil (E1, 12): Abe, 3rd, Joe, 5th
Epee (B1, 15): Abe, 3rd (C01)
Saber (B1, 19): Bonnie, 3rd, Abe, 7th
1/4/02: Duel in the Desert, at Vegas. Cedric, Joe, Randy, Chris Thorn, Laura, and Abe show up, on the weak claims that it's 'for the fencing'. Cedric admits that he's there to get married to an American so he can get citizenship. He doesn't manage to, but he does win the foil event with just over a hundred participants.
Foil (A1, 102): Cedric, 1st (A02), Randy Paffenroth, 59th, Joe, 75th
Epee (A8, 121): Abe, 78th
Saber (B1, 47): Abe, 10th
Saber, W (B1, 20): Laura, 15th
1/13/02: Randy, Joe, and Cedric showed up to the kickoff event for the new year in So. Cal. Cedric dominated as usual, re-earning his A02 for the second time less than two weeks into 2002. Randy earned his C02 in foil (now he's only slightly under-rated, as opposed to very under-rated when he had that E02). All three also fenced epee, with Cedric picking up a B02 in epee the first time he'd ever competed in the weapon.
Foil (A1, 36): Cedric, 1st, Randy, 6th (C02), Joe, 24th
Epee (A1, 34): Cedric, 2nd (B02), Randy, 13th, Joe, 31st
1/20/02: Joe, Tiago, and Abe show up to Orange Coast. Abe re-earns his C02 in epee by coming in third. Tiago earns his E02 in saber by winning the tournament -- beating teammate Abe 15-14 in the gold medal bout, with their coach as the director. 'Next try... 15-13 last time, 15-14 this time,' says Abe. Uh-uh. Tiago ended up winning 5-0 at Westerns.
Foil (B1, 18): Joe, 14th
Epee (B1, 16): Abe, 3rd (C02)
Saber (E1, 11): Tiago, 1st (E02), Abe, 2nd
2/2/02: The usual suspects (Cedric, Joe, Randy, Chris, H, and Abe) show up for USC's annual Linkmeyer event, featuring open foil and epee this year. The big news is that Joe earned his D02 by beating his own teammate Randy in the round of 16. Oh, and Cedric won the tourney (ho-hum).
Foil (B1, 35): Cedric, 1st, Joe, (D02), Randy, 9th, Abe, 13th, H, 29th, Chris, 33rd
Epee (A1, 28): Abe, 14th
2/10/02: Doc Laura and Abe show up to an unrated foil tournament, gleefully thinking that they are sandbagging. They are. Unfortunately, so are the old fogies from Conejo, Sean and Dave, as well as a couple of high school fencers. Abe barely survives his round of 8 bout, winning 15-14 on a lucky call, and Laura survives her round of 4 bout, winning 15-14 with her opponent stepping off the back of the strip once. Both Laura and Abe earn E02s in foil.
Foil (D1, 24): Laura, 2nd (E02), Abe, 3rd (E02)
2/10/02: While Laura and Abe are off sandbagging at an unrated tourney, Cedric, Randy, Chris, and Joe are off fencing at Orange Coast's open foil and 'D' foil tourneys. I'd write more about this one, but I was busy avoiding not-so-sharp pointy metal objects in So Cal.
Foil (B1, 22): Cedric, 1st, Randy, 12th, Haomiao, 17th, Chris, 20th
Foil (E1, 11): Joe, 5th, Haomiao, 6th, Chris, 9th.
2/24/02: Joe shows up to the Div II/III foil quals, and barely misses the cut after being stuck in a murderous pool.
Foil (C1, 26): Joe, 12th
3/17/02: Mens Saber team quals. The team of Randy, Tiago, and Abe is badly outmatched by Falcon A, and knows it. They put up a pretty good fight against Falcon B, though, but lost 45-42. Tiago ended up netting a bronze in the Div I quals, and a silver in the Div II/III quals.
Team Saber, M (3 teams): Randy, Tiago, Abe, 3rd
Saber, Div I (E1, 10): Tiago, 3rd, Abe, 10th
Saber, Div II/III (E1, 11): Tiago, 2nd, Abe, 4th
3/24/02: Joe, Chris, and Randy show up for an open foil tourney out at Orange Coast. It was fabulous. It was exciting. I wasn't there. (yeah, it was probably fabulous and exciting precisely because I wasn't there).
Foil (B1, 27): Randy, 7th, Joe, 16th, Chris, 27th
4/14/02: PCC mens foil/epee, womens epee team quals... ah, those fencing days that you want to forget. The mens foil team of Randy, Joe, H, and Abe (as the backup) got rocked despite Randy's heroics, who twice turned 40-31, 32 matches into 45-43, 42 spectacles -- unfortunately, we were still on the 42 or 43 end of that. The mens epee team of Randy, Tim Elling, and Abe won its round of 8 bout, ensuring a trip to Vegas, but then lost the next two bouts in a row. The womens epee team of Andrea, Melinda, and Sara Quan ran into a tough BHFC squad in the first round and lost.
Team Foil, M (4 teams): Randy, Joe, H, Abe, 4th
Team Epee, M (7 teams): Randy, Tim Elling, Abe, 4th
Team Epee, W (4 teams): Sara Quan, Andrea, Melinda, 4th
4/21/02: Last Orange Coast event of the season. Joe and Abe are the only ones to show up, though. Joe redeems his D02 rating by earning it (again), coming in sixth. Abe picks up a C02 in foil (now he's very over-rated, as opposed to only slightly over-rated when he had that E02) by coming in third. Abe is now higher rated in his both secondary weapons than his primary weapon (C02 in foil and epee, E01 in saber).
Foil (B1, 15): Abe, 3rd (C02), Joe, 6th
Epee (C1, 16): Abe, 5th
4/28/02: Man in the Iron Mask. The organizers threw in an odd twist this year by removing the open saber and replacing it with one-touch foil and one-touch epee. Cedric, Joe, Randy, Sascha, Melinda, H, and Abe showed up for this one, fencing a variety of events. Randy was one Cedric short of his B02 rating, losing to his teammate in the round of 8. Abe re-earned his C02 in the open epee event by coming in 6th. Cedric... well, Cedric won the event.
Foil (A1, 33): Cedric, 1st, Randy, 7th, Joe, 19th, Haomiao, 29th
Epee (A1, 33): Abe, 6th, Sascha, 26th, Andrea, 31st, Melinda, 33rd
One-touch Foil (15): Cedric, 1st, Abe, 5th, Joe, 8th
One-touch Epee (34): Abe, 7th, Andrea, 20th, Melinda, 22nd
5/4/02: Pacific Coast Championships, conveniently held at Vegas. Caltech fielded mens foil, mens saber, and womens epee teams. The mens foil team of Cedric, Randy, Joe, and Abe as the backup took third, almost entirely through Cedric's heriocs this time (as opposed to Randy's at local qualifiers). Against two different teams, Cedric turned double digit deficits into leads or wins -- at one point scoring 13 straight touches in the bronze medal match to turn a 40-32 deficit into a 45-40 win. The mens saber team and womens epee teams were both knocked out in the first round.
Team Foil, M (8 teams): Cedric, Randy, Joe, Abe (backup), 3rd
Team Epee, W (7 teams): Sara, Andrea, Melinda, 6th
Team Saber, M (7 teams): Tiago, Randy, Abe, 6th
Saber, M (A1, 28): Abe, 24th
5/4/02: H and two of the people from the advanced fencing class (K & G) show up to UCLA's 'everything under one roof' tournament (novice foil, team foil, team epee, team saber). Laura brings some of her 'SC boys along as well, and fences in all three team events. H rocks through the novice tournament (one of the UCLA boys even brings up 'Man, that new guy you guys have is really good' while I was visiting), and Laura's 'SC team does okay for itself (two first places, and a second). *non-USFA event, and I'm not sure about the number of entries in each event.
Foil (17?): Haomiao, 1st
5/19/02: Unrated tourney day. So Cal's end of year event is a triple-header, with unrated foil, unrated epee, and D and under saber. The Old Man Gang grouses about being locked out, and Abe decides to sneak in the back door as a foil director. Tim, H, Eric Cady, Sascha, and Melinda do show up to fence, though. Tim, in his first individual USFA tournament, picks up an E02 by placing third. Teammate Eric barely misses his own E02 rating, losing 15-14 in the round of eight. Laura sweeps through her pools like a plague (odd for a doc) and is top seeded, but trips up a bit in DEs, losing 15-13 in the round of eight.
Foil (D1, 20): Sascha, 11th, Haomiao, 15th
Epee (D1, 30): Tim, 3rd (E02), Eric, 7th, Melinda, 25th, Sascha, 30th
Saber (D1, 16): Laura, 5th
