Torres by Ravensburger, 1999

Personal Information

Acquired: 21 September 2001
Even though I bought this game in September, I did not get a chance to play it until March of 2002. The major reason for this delay was that many of my gaming friends decided to go on a Settlers of Catan bender, so alternative games have been limited. Torres plays pretty well and is much more fun then the instructions make it sound. Like Princes of Florence, the game revolves around making the most of a limited number of actions during a fixed number of turns. Also similar is the fact that the story behind the game is clearly non-essential and merely a facade for the underlying strategy game. So far, I have only played once...and I came in last. Hopefully, with a little more experience, I will do much better. Overall, a solid game with a reasonable visual appeal.

Description:

In this abstract strategy game, players must use a limited number of action points to build castles and place their knights as high up in the castles as possible. The game is played in exactly three phases, with points scored at the end of each phase. The game is played with plastic, 3D building blocks and wooden knights. Also included are action cards that allow players to break the normal rules to gain an advantage. Optional master cards allow for special objectives that can result in bonus points at the end of the game.

My Score: 7.5/10
