Services

Caltech Women's Club volunteers provide the following services to the Caltech / JPL Community:

Babysitting Co-op

Helen Angove                  (626) 793-7386           htangove (at) yahoo.com

This co-operative baby-sitting group provides a Caltech or JPL parent who will come to your home and baby-sit your children.  In exchange you are asked to do the same for other members of the group.  Some members are available for daytime sits.  Call Helen to get a copy of the rules and current membership before joining!

CATS (Caltech Architectural Tour Service)

Romy Wyllie    (626) 794-7773    romy (at) caltech.edu
Dee Draper    (818) 790-4703    deedraper (at) charter.net

CATS is a group of Women’s Club members who give architectural tours of the campus.  We hold a one-hour business meeting in the Athenaeum on the 1st Tuesday of the month starting at 11:45 am.  In addition to gathering information on the campus buildings, we take occasional field trips to places of architectural interest.  Anyone can join - all you need is an interest in the campus and some flexible time.  We have a complete script of our tour material and give personal training to new members.  Our next training program for new docents begins in October.  If you are remotely interested, why not come to our October 2nd meeting and find out more about us?

Community tours are given on the fourth Thursday of each month at 11:00 a.m. starting at the Athenaeum.  The tour lasts approximately one hour and thirty minutes and is open to all members of the Caltech community and visitors to the campus.

Baby Furniture and Household Equipment Loan Pool

234 S. Catalina Avenue (behind the house at 230), between Del Mar and Cordova Avenues
Open Thursdays 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. (no appointment necessary - just drop by!)
(626) 584-9773 (call only when open)
Email: furnpool (at) caltech.edu

The Furniture Pool stocks a constantly changing inventory of cribs, strollers, high chairs, baby swings, car seats, baby bathtubs, and other useful items for small children, as well as pots and pans, plates, glasses, irons, coffee pots and other household items.   Borrowers must be affiliated with Caltech, JPL, the Huntington Library or Carnegie Observatories.   In order to fund new equipment purchases a nominal donation is requested for some items (e.g., cribs $20, electrical items $3); toys, children’s clothes and maternity clothes are free.

Donations of new and gently used baby and household items are greatly appreciated and accepted during open hours.   All donations should be in good working condition and of immediate use to incoming students/families.   Please note we have only limited storage space and cannot store items larger than a crib.

The Baby Furniture and Household Equipment Loan Pool is staffed by volunteers from the Caltech Women’s Club.

If you have questions, or if you are interested in volunteering (typically one shift of 90 minutes once a month), please contact Sylke Pfeiffer [Sylke.pfeiffer (at) gmail.com].
