Professor Michael Brown, 2007 Feynman Award Winner
Well-known for discovering Eris and the resulting demotion of Pluto, Professor Mike Brown will discuss his teaching experiences, the good and the bad. Currently a professor of planetary astronomy, the 2007 Feynman Award winner has been recognized for building hands-on courses and engaging students in the research process.

A Panel Discussion on Teaching Experiences
Do you enjoy teaching but aren't sure which type of educational institution most suits you and your future career? Come and participate in a discussion with panelists who teach at a high school, a community college, a liberal arts college and our own research university. They will describe what you should expect in your first few years and answer any questions you may have about the pros and cons of each environment, including teaching requirements, students and career progression.

Turning Around a Problem Course
Dr. Maria Klawe, President of Harvey Mudd College
Dr. Maria Klawe will talk about two times when she has chosen to teach introductory level math classes that were disliked and received poor reviews from good students. She will describe the approaches she tried with each couse, and the outcomes, both postive and negative. Klawe is Harvey Mudd's 5th President. She was formerly the dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Science at Princeton University. Her research is in mathematics and computer science. Slides

Understanding the International Classroom: How Culture Impacts Teaching and Learning
Dr. James Stigler
James W. Stigler is Professor of Psychology at UCLA, Director of the TIMSS video studies, and founder
and CEO of LessonLab. He is co-author of two recent books: The Teaching Gap (with James Hiebert, Free
Press, 1999) and The Learning Gap (with Harold Stevenson, Simon & Schuster, 1992). He has received numerous
awards for his research, including a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1989 and the QuEST award from the
American Federation of Teachers in 1995. Dr. Stigler is best known for his observational work in
classrooms, and has pioneered the use of multimedia technology for the study of classroom instruction.

Alycen Chan, director of the Caltech Y RISE tutoring program, will be leading a workshop entitled "Strategies for Effective Classroom Planning: Middle School to High School". The workshop is designed to give guided, hands-on experience in designing your own classroom curriculum.
