The Caltech Initiative in Computational Molecular Biology (CMB) is a novel effort supporting training and research at the interface between the Biological and the Physical / Chemical / Computational sciences. This effort has been made possible by a grant from the Burroughs-Wellcome Foundation. CMB is directed towards the iterative, integrated, closed-loop application of quantitative modeling and methods to laboratory experiments on complex problems in molecular biology -- an approach more typically employed in the physical sciences. A central motivation is that this interplay between theoretical models and actual laboratory research will not only engender new experimental tools and techniques for the pursuit of molecular biology, but also provide new avenues for understanding interacting biological systems and subsystems.
