The Caltech Chess Club welcomes players of all levels and from all of the
Caltech community. Whether you are an expert or a novice, you will enjoy
our weekly meetings. If you want to learn to play better chess, there
are always players willing to help you.
To join the club mailing list, send
the message
"subscribe" to chess-request@caltech.edu, you may unsubscribe automatically at any
time. Membership is free, we want everyone who enjoys chess to come when they can.
The
club is going through a rebuilding period, but we still participate in
team tournaments, visit the Chess Park on Santa Monica Beach, and
perform simultaneous exhibitions around campus. In recent years,
many strong players have not been very involved with our club, but we
want new Techers to break this trend, and returning
undergrads/grads/postdocs/faculty to begin contributing your talents!
In its first five years of existence, the Caltech Chess Club achieved
many successes. The club has won the US Amateur Team West Chess
Championship three times, and has won the National
Amateur Team Championship twice (see News).
Caltech also defeated MIT's chess team in two online chess matches.
Weekly meetings
Page House Dining Hall (Building #53)
Friday nights, 8-10:30 PM
Come use the new equipment!
We supply boards, sets, clocks, a demo board, and many club members have several books.
The most common activity is friendly speed chess, but every meeting is different.
Please show up and suggest your favorite chess activity, be it bughouse, analyzing top players' games, or anything in between!
Suggestions are encouraged for everything from how to use club funds to when and where meetings should be held.
Let us know if you have trouble finding Page House or getting in. Email for phone contact info.
Club leadership
- President: Rob Rosenberg, rosenber@caltech.edu
- I'm
not the best player at Caltech, but I am committed to improving the
club in my year as president. My best chess credential is that I
was the 7th Grade California Champion in 2002.
