Informal Discussions


Informal discussion is a very good form to get us together to discuss something that nobody will tell us in such a graduate school. We hope to get people from different backgrounds to come to informally chat with our members who are interested in different topics. Please direct any specific topic that's interesting to you to the current committee.

The goals of CAS delegation visiting are:
1.  Meet the scholars in the science fields in USA.
2.  Having a 0.6 billion RMB budget to develop the programs for the new century.
3.  Recruit at least 300 scholars for CAS branches in year 2000 from all over the world.
 
The discussion topics will be the followings (but not limited to):
1. Human resources
2. Invitation for overseas scholars
3. Sino-American Collaboration in Science Research
4. Listen the feedback from all the SC scholars

Minutes of CAS Delegation Meetings in UCLA, USC, & Cal Tech.

Over 50 Chinese professors and scholars attended the meetings with CAS
Delegation in UCLA, USC and Cal Tech on 8/24.  Professor He Yan, the
Deputy Director-General from Bureau of Personnel Management & Education,
made a presentation about the Recruitment Guidelines of CAS "Hundred
Talents Program in 1999".

Prof. He pointed out that:
1.  The CAS is planing to recruit 600 scholars from all over the world
in the next 3 years for the new century.

2.  From 1998-1999, CAS has engaged 224 researchers (134 scholars of
them were invited from overseas).

3.  There are over 14 different funds and budgets available for the
Chinese scholars from overseas for both short term and long term
programs.  For more information, please contact Dir. Zhao Xichao at
"xczhao@dial.cashq.ac.cn".

4.  CAS is going to invite some Overseas View Assessors for Scientific
Research Grants among the Chinese professors in United States.  If you
are interested in serving in this committee, please contact Dr. Jiang
Zhenying, Secretary of CSA at "zjiang@barstow.cc.ca.us".  The deadline
is 9/30/99.

All of the professors and scholars who attended the meetings actively
participated in the discussions.  Some major concerns, constructive
suggestions were well addressed.

The meetings lasted for  8 hours 15 minutes (UCLA 10:00am-1:00pm, USC
3:00-5:30pm, Cal Tech 7:30-9:45pm).

We have invited Ms. Alice Sun and her assistant Miao Hai to give the talk on immigration issue this Thur. 7:30pm,  the location will be  announced  later.

Here is some background about her.
Ms. Sun has worked in Law Institute of Chinese Academy of Social Science before and got her J. D. in US. She has been working in immigration law area since 1990, and specialized in employment based immigration.

She has successfully helped  a lot of Chinese graduates, scholars and researchers to get their green cards. Recently there are some new situations in immigration.  Ms.Sun would like to share the information and her experience with us.

BTW. Her office is on Lack Ave.,  which is very close to us.

Well, this one is kind of formal.

ball.gif (1653 bytes) Discussion with former Caltech C members on chances other than doing science after graduation (industry, consulting, open your own business, etc.) The time is 4-5pm on March 13th, 1999, Saturday. Location is at Catalina central recreation room. Party follows the discussion.

We invited three former Caltech C members to come back to share their experience with us. One is Huimin Zhao, after finishing his Ph.D. at Francis Arnold's group in Chemical Engineering, now he is a research scientist at Dow Chemical Company, the 5th biggest chemical company in the world. The second one is Qianli Liu, after finishing his Ph.D. in Physics (Ahmed Zewail's group) in 1996, he start his own company -- Internet Communication Enterprise, speciallized on internet and programming. We also invited Yong Guo, who graduated in 1991 from Caltech EE. After being an assistant professor at Clemenson University in South Carolina, he came back to join TRW, a company specialized in satallite technology, communications, etc. He is a project manager at TRW now. We hope this would be helpful to you, getting to know some chances other than doing science, how to start it, how to make the decision, how is that kind of life, etc...

ball.gif (1653 bytes) Discussion with Chinese professors on-campus (Dr. Zhen-Gang Wang and Dr. Yizhao Hou), done.

Yue Qi organized one disscusion with two young Caltech Chinese professors, Jan. 1999. The topic is how to do science. About 30 people attended the discussion, and it went on very well. Dr. Zhen-Gang Wang from Chemical Engineering and Dr. Yizhao Hou from Applied Math. talked about their experiences, mostly on theoretical sciences. We hope that we can get some professors to talk about experimental science also in the future.
